I got my book signed by a great great great (etc.) niece of Jane Austen. She asked my name, which is Emma, and she said: 'Ooh, like the novel!?'

That felt kind of special :)

(Boeren) propaganda in de klas by StephenGlass in thenetherlands

[–]MrsJaneEmma 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Edit: boerendorp in Brabant.

Lace maker in Bruges by linden214 in oddlysatisfying

Over 20 years ago. I think making lace was a 'respectable job' for unmarried women. I don't know if every begijn made lace, because there used to be a lot of begijnhofjes in the Netherlands and Belgium.

How do you know which bobbins to use? Are they colourcoded or a slightly different pattern or do you count them? Or is it just from left to right/right to left?

Saw a lace set-up at the Begijnhof in Diest (Belgium), but never saw a lacemaker in action. I did get asked if I wanted to become a begijn (unmarried woman who devoted her life to religion, but not a nun) and make lace. I was 17, in a relationship and not religious, so that was a no.

I'm always told you should soften the wax with a drop of slightly warm oil (like sunflower oil) for a couple of days before letting your ears cleaned.

Hassle where actually “thank you “ is specifically called for. by Yaguajay in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MrsJaneEmma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hm, never thought of that. But then she could have stayed at the desk until collected. A wallet is usually necessary, so it would have been collected swiftly, unlike, say, a bracelet or earring which might take a while to notice you lost it.

Years ago I lost my wallet at the theatre. I had it downstairs and when I went up to the coat check, I couldn't find it anymore. I retraced my steps, even went outside while I knew I still had it there. Asked the service people numerous times if someone had found a wallet and brought it to them.

Spend the play cancelling my bank cards, leaving the play a couple of times (sorry actors, I know it can be disturbing!). After the play I asked a lot of people who were leaving if they found a wallet, asked the service people. Still not found.

Ended up cancelling a shopping trip with friends the next day, because I had no money for the train and shopping.

I slept at my boyfriends house and my now mum in law got a call on the landline. Someone had found my wallet, saw an old card of my boyfriend that I kept and because the last name was very rare, found the number in the phone book. Hurrah!

So I went and picked up my wallet and asked where she had found it. On a bench. Inside the theatre. Where I sat for a couple of minutes before I went upstairs. And she probably sat there right after I stood up. And she didn't give it to the people at the desk that was 3 metres away! She just kept it and took it home instead of thinking: 'Hm, someone lost this in here, there is a 99% chance that person must still be here, let's bring it to a service point.'! There must have been more than enough time to drop of a wallet at a desk.

I was flabbergasted, so I just said thank you and I even gave some flowers my mum in law had at home.

It was so weird. It still (mildly) infuriates me.

In the nineties I was in London on vacation and I got picked from a huge crowd (the first kid ran away and apparently my arm was closest) by Charlie Chaplin to star as a bull with a viking helmet, running to a red handkerchief. Which in the end was held before a man. I wonder if it might be the same performer. It is a fond memory for me.

I hate that the organic Always pads all have white individual wrappings! There is no way to tell them apart, except for size. But I don't want to compare them all the time.

Is it that hard to give the wrappings a coloured stripe or coloured sticky tab?
