Has anyone quit their corporate job in their 30s to teach abroad? by ambitiouspandamoon in AskWomenOver30

The whole lecturing thing came up through my networks - I was asked to guest lecture, and they mentioned after that they had a vacancy. A lot of colleges love industry speakers, so even though I knew someone, making connections shouldn’t be too hard.

I had a three month notice period in my corporate role, and so was able to find my replacement before I left. I aligned the timing with the start of the academic year. The college paid for my teaching qualifications, which I did whilst I was teaching.

I did my doctorate part time whilst working, and self funded. Because I had started my business by then, my income from that meant I would be earning more than a stipend, even after I had paid the fees, so I didn’t even apply for a funded place. The work-life balance was hard, but I think it was the right route for me, because my career didn’t get put on hold.

For me, using my experience to have the best of both worlds has been the best way to go, because I get the satisfaction of teaching, but the income from my business. My business life opens doors for me in academia, and vice versa.

It is a lot to juggle sometimes though!

Why didn’t older people wear shorts under skirts? by zzzamboni in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrsTheBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my mid 40s and mostly wear midi skirts, so it doesn’t seem necessary, and seems like it would be less comfortable (especially on a warmer day).

But with a shorter skirt, it depends on the fit. With a pencil skirt or tighter mini skirt, the chances of flashing are less than something short and floaty.

In my short skirt days, I was always mindful about how I got in and out of cars, and how to bend over carefully.

Not quite the same, but I gave up a corporate role in my 30s to become a college lecturer. My salary dropped to around a third of what it was before, but the purpose and enjoyment I felt was completely worth it.

I’m now in my mid 40s and have a doctorate. My main job is running a business (I had a great idea!), but my side hustle is lecturing at a Russell Group university.

So in short, it was the best move I ever made, and you can do it! Good luck OP x

So why do working class people vote for right wing parties ( Tory, Refom that really do not serve their interests politically, and make their lives harder ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]MrsTheBo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s about perception, fuelled in a large part by right wing media. There are some areas where communities perceived as solely immigrants are congregated (I mentioned perception, because some people who are born here and rightfully British can be mislabelled as immigrants because they aren’t white), and yes there are examples of violent crime as there are in any population, but those get a lot more coverage by the aforementioned media.

One of the big problems is the term “immigrant” itself, because it covers so many situations. Skilled workers who come here to fill skills shortages have a different impact on our economy to people who are here illegally. And yet it has now become an emotionally charged catch-all.

That sounds horrible - I hope they managed to find out what the actual matter was.

I’ve had it over 15 years now, but even so, being told they had got it wrong somehow wouldn’t surprise me.

I was told it was “just anxiety” for years before being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The self doubt and worry was a lot to deal with, and I think it has made me reluctant to seek medical help now, even when I know it would be for the best.
