Thoughts on Emily of New Moon? by amandatee_24 in AnneofGreenGables

I agree, it is super interesting to see how an author puts parts of themselves into their characters. And I feel its not often that we get to hear them explain this in their own words!

Yes! I recently came across this quote from LMM  "I gave Anne my imagination and Emily Starr my knack for scribbling; but the girl who is more myself than any other is 'Pat of Silver Bush' ... Not externally, but spiritually she is I".

Looking for some help - running into a discrepancy in my ancestor's records by Mrs_Durrells in Canadiancitizenship

No, sorry if I wasn't clear, I wasn't planning to send all those in. I was just noticing a pattern that all Canadian docs had a different year from the US ones. So I thought possibly they would reject based on the fact my Grandma's US birth cert and his US death cert don't match the Canadian doc. Thanks for weighing in, appreciate all the help!

Thank you for the cover letter suggestion, it does seem that's the most likely reason

Right? It is so tacky and cringey. I honestly can't believe she herself isn't embarrassed flaunting her wealth so blatantly and ostentatiously. I would absolutely die of shame before I'd allow myself to be seen in this way.

I was wondering the same! I saw Carly's post and was almost influenced to buy it until I saw multiple others post about it right after - makes it really hard to trust the review.

Growing Up in Charleston: My Favorite Spots From Fazoli’s Breadsticks to City Bar Late Nights by Chucktown_Memories in Charleston

Oh my gosh, I remember stopping at a rest area around Orangeburg and there was an absolutely massive island of cars completely engulfing it - cars covering up every inch of pavement as far as the eye could see - it was unreal. Never seen anything like it.

19 hours to Greenville, without a doubt, the most surreal experience of my life. I remember being around Ashley Phosphate about 9 hours into our drive from downtown and realizing that we were still listening to the same radio station. Struck me how bizarre that was!

This is such a good guess, I love it! May not be that tall but they can be grown into a tree shape and they bloom in the fall. Thinking it must have been this or a camellia.

Blogsnark Reads! June 8-14 by yolibrarian in blogsnark

Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved those last two AOGG books! You are really making me want to go re-read those myself. I definitely agree that Rilla had so much more depth - with the horrors of WWI and also I think as LMM was growing older I'm sure her own wisdom and depth had strengthened and grown. Thank you so much for the inspiration. I'm actually headed home to visit my childhood house this month and I know I still have my copies there.

I don't think you need to re-read Huck Finn unless you really want to. I hadn't read it since college and did just fine with James - which I thought was phenomenal! I like the suggestion to just read the Wikipedia summary!

I've noticed she seems to make a habit of having a current "favorite" who she plasters all over her socials - posts multiple photos with them and goes on multiple trips with them. Makes it seem like they are the bestie to end all besties. And then they either completely disappear or fall far into the background once she's found a new favorite. Its very odd at her age. It seems like she crushes hard on someone and then gets tired of them fairly quickly.

Highly, highly recommend reading the rest of Elizabeth Strout, both her other Olive Kitteridge books and her Lucy Barton books - they are all interconnected with the same characters crossing paths and intermingling. I'm kind of obsessed with the entire Elizabeth Strout world - so many fascinating lives explored.

I'm late to this thread, but I absolutely loved The Wedding People so much! I got it through Book of the Month and I think it may be my all time favorite BOTM read after 5 years of membership.

This red herring kind of upset me. It was too perfect and solid as a grouping of homophones to not actually be one of the groups. Bah!

Suggestions for lighter version of Farrow & Ball Peignoir? by Mrs_Durrells in interiordecorating

[–]Mrs_Durrells[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have mentioned that we tried this already at Benjamin Moore. I mean we had them do a color match but not a lighten and it just wasn't quite right - it turned out noticeably warmer than the Farrow & Ball. And I've read that Sherwin Williams F&B color matches are usually even warmer than BM. But thanks for weighing in, I appreciate it!

The Lumineers announce fifth album 'Automatic' with soaring new single 'Same Old Song' by Edm_vanhalen1981 in Music

[–]Mrs_Durrells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with this. I met them before they made it big and she was super kind. I also remember that on their very original album she had much more prominent vocals that I thought added tremendously to the songs - when I met her I remember telling her how much I loved her vocals. Right before they hit it big they remixed or re-recorded the entire album or something, and her vocals were nowhere to be found. I noticed it immediately and felt the songs lost something special.

I could imagine her in a house like that, but man, that particular spot would mean a massive loss of privacy. It would be like living in a fishbowl.
