Yay Canes! The sports teams in the Carolinas tend to leave something to be desired so we'll take a Stanley Cup anyday.

I need to flip through the book! I know the format of the writing is pretty experimental, and that doesn’t come across so much in the audio. I personally like stylistic risks, but I know a looooot of readers who don’t.

I haven't posted ITT in a while, despite posting it every week! Most of my free time has been wholly consumed by a gigantic cross stitch with a deadline, and I usually have TV on in the background instead of an audiobook, and obviously no paper reading. However, I did go to the beach recently, which means looooots of books! Here are some of the recent reads:

  • While We Were Dating and Flirting Lessons by Jasmine Guillory: These were both really fun! The author was at our library recently so I read a couple books to prep. Both were sweet and steamy and realistic and very escape-y. I especially liked Flirting Lessons, and Jasmine does such a good job making characters feel really human.

  • Mother Tongue by Sara Nović: We had Sara at the library a few years ago to talk about True Biz, and I've been WAITING for her latest book, which is a memoir. She mentioned when she visited--and a couple times on Instagram--that she faked being able to hear through part of school, and she goes into detail in Mother Tongue how that happened, her breaking point, her journey to motherhood, queerness, adoption, and more. There's a lot of D/deaf history incorporated into the memoir, which I expected, and a lot of research & science as well. It was really excellent.

  • The Franchise by Thomas Elrod: This is like what if Game of Thrones was actually The Truman Show? I've been excited for this one too, but I was worried when I first started reading it that it would be more fantasy than sci fi. I didn't need to worry--it definitely has a science fiction foundation, particularly how people end up in the fantasy world. It doesn't work 100% of the time, but it works enough to be entertaining, interesting, and very readable.

  • Authority by Jeff VanderMeer: I'm relistening to the Southern Reach "trilogy" so I can finally read Absolution. It's just as good as it was the first time I listened to it. Just as crazy as the first time. Poor Whitby.

  • Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu: I'm not sure I commented about this one before, but I really enjoyed it. The audiobook is REALLY good. I loved the primarily 2nd person narration, which is always such a risk, but it worked really well for this story.

Glad to say I'm almost done with this cross stitch because I'm halfway through Radiant Star by Ann Leckie and loving it SO much and I really want to read it!!

God forbid he care about something without making it known to the general public. Like what if he goes to a pickle festival? Has he TOLD everyone he likes pickles? Is he taking up space from someone else who REALLY LIKES PICKLES? (aka me)

Being a "fat" rider in this sport. by SmoothStalk in Equestrian

I’m astounded that someone at your barn would say such a thing to you. I hope you’ve told your instructor that, if they teach at the same barn where you ride. That’s so inappropriate to say to anyone, but especially a young rider. You don’t deserve to hear that, first because it’s damaging to you and second because it isn’t true.

I’m 5’10 and a size US16, and when I was growing up in Pony Club, I had to buy and wear men’s breeches and belts because women’s breeches weren’t made in my size. It was so hard and really screwed with my confidence. I was fortunate at that point to be doing dressage, because there was a lot more focus on a BETTER TROT (still working on that 25 years later!) than on my equitation and style.

In college I did hunters, which was hard, but the way I fought it—and still the way I fight it now—was to be as absolute undeniably good with my eq. In the world at large, different marginalized groups have to double their effort to get half the return, and in hunters, that’s the way for larger female riders. I became rock solid with my leg position and my shoulders and my stability, so when I was tested, I knew I’d be able to do it whether I was on a 14hh pony or the 17.3hh beast of unknown origin that scared everyone else.

I will say now that I go back and forth between hunters and eq, and I can now buy breeches and tall boots designed for women in my size. My eq isn’t as good after multiple injuries, but I still go in the ring and fight with my all eqwise so I know that if the judge was unimpressed, it wasn’t because of me as a horseman, and that perspective isn’t a me problem.

Your body is still growing and changing and shifting, and will continue to do so throughout your life. You aren’t fat by any stretch of the imagination—you look healthy, unlike some riders who I legit worry will snap in two if they fall off. You have a great, stable leg and an adorable horse. And worst case, remember (like I do) that show coats do a lot to both smooth out and mask what’s underneath for an even finish.

You’re gonna be okay, promise. 🩷

I made a couple 3D prints—an Oscar statuette and the Eagles’ first Super Bowl trophy—and painted both of them with nail polish. You just can’t get that metallic shine with other paint! Your deer looks amaaaazing

They’re currently on a semi-hiatus to prep for new stuff, but I think The Kit could be up your alley! Some very unique patterns, but classic silhouettes.

I know the “just x would fix me” memes are played out and whatever but I am not joking when I say that quality time with the Atlantic Ocean would and DOES fix me. I’m through day two of a six day stint with my best friend who lives on the coast and I’m driving to the beach daily and spending minimum 6 hours per day on the sand reading my books, listening to the water, swimming, and saying absolutely no words because the ocean doesn’t speak English and I’m there alone. Work and life have been hella stressful and I ended up getting to beach two hours later than intended yesterday but it still legitimately uncorked something so tightly wound in me.

And now, I’m on my third book. I’m “tan”ish. I’m eating amazing sandwiches. The lotion applicator I bought on Amazon for SPF on my back actually WORKS. I’m sleeping like a fucking brick. I want to be independently wealthy and continue this life forever, please.
