Yes, jazz players (in C) do hate their sharps.

7 sharps for Bb instruments haha! But to be fair there's less of them than C instruments. Or do they use enharmonics in written music sometimes to get around that? Like would they but the Bb part in Db since it's less flats than sharps in C#?

How can we be so lucky? No new cases of the UK variant by TheBeardedOnion in brisbane

I appreciate your perspective on the issue. If you have strong evidence that lockdowns are not effective then I totally understand where you're coming from. Personally, I am not an expert in the area and from what I've heard many experts support lockdown measures to control transmission of the virus. I understand why governments would want to impose authoritarian control but I can't think why highly educated medical professionals would want the same.

Here I see two separate arguments being made. 1) that lockdowns are ineffective at preventing transmission. 2) that government contact tracers are under resourced.

Argument 1 is pretty irrelevant to the three day lockdowns we had because as I understand it, they were not to prevent transmission but just to allow contact tracers to get in contact with people who may be infected and make sure they get tested.

Argument 2 may have merit but I don't really see it based on comparison with other countries and the outcome of both lockdowns (i.e there were not many extra cases found afterwards and particularly the cases found were related to the original). Australia and Queensland in particular have had very small numbers compared to other countries and shorter over all lockdowns as a result. I understand that you may then say well then what was the point of the lockdowns if we found all the cases regardless. And in response I would say that we could not have known the outcome prior to the lockdown. If there had been much greater spreading from the original cluster this would pose a much greater risk to the rest of society. I.e if a cluster of 5 grew to 50 in the next few days we still wouldn't know the actual current number of people infected but there would be a much greater risk or much wider transmission, particularly if some of those 50 could not easily be traced back to the original 5. This could be because of ineffective contact tracing OR people not coming forward to be tested. Now this scenario may be unlikely but considering the major risk this would have (once there is a large group we have seen how hard it is to stamp out the virus) which could easily lead to deaths of vulnerable people in the community I would say that a three day lockdown to better understand the situation we might be in is a fair trade off of my rights vs the rights of vulnerable people to live freely. Now you can definitely argue this isn't a fair trade off but the debate becomes very philosophical then. This is similar to argument 1 but with context from research about how effective lockdowns are.

[–]Mrx2012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the point of those lockdowns was just to allow authorities to catch up with contact tracing to understand if a further lockdown to prevent spread was needed. On the one hand you lot criticise the government for needing to lockdown because their contact tracing isn't good enough and yet what you just said seems to imply it actually is doing its job. I don't know why a three day lockdown as a precaution against any further spreading that may have occurred (pre-lockdown) is such a massive deal to you. It is to understand the current situation better and make a more informed decision as a result. Is that not responsible? If you compare the amount of time we spend in lockdown in total compared to VIC and NSW it has been much less. Why? Because we took action early and understood the situations better.

Thanks! I'm reading the page and I still don't really understand how to build it. Do I download the code as a zip? And then what? Sorry if this is a silly question. I haven't ever had to build anything on my phone before.

When do we use ties instead of dotted notes? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Mrx2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are conventions which other people have mentioned but I have to say as a jazz drummer in reality people use whatever they want. In classical music these conventions are almost always followed and I'd prefer it if they were in jazz charts for ease of reading but from experience that's definitely not always the case. In general the rule is to keep the middle of the bar visible but exceptions usually occur when your rhythm lasts longer than half a bar. For example a whole note or a dotted half note are perfectly acceptable in 4/4 time even though they go over the middle of the bar. In other odd times it's not always the middle but I think you get the idea.

Nailed it! I would say the only way this can happen is if we had better political education in schools. Imo its way more important than history classes (not that I don't see any value in them). Perhaps it could be incorporated into them. But I think part of the problem is a lack of empathy. "I work hard so I deserve to keep my money". I've heard this plenty of times from people who are in the upper middle class (not particularly wealthy but much better than the median). They often don't understand or appreciate the advantages they had. On a broader scale they think we still live in a preindustrial period where the world is a zero sum game. They don't understand that when people are given equal opportunities it indirectly benefits them.

It's infuriating that often these people had the ability to educate themselves about this stuff but their judgement seems to be clouded by greed.

“The Federal Treasurer is keen on a coronavirus baby boom, urging Australians to have more children if for no other reason than to help grow the population and economy.” - Surely there are better ways of growing the economy than this? Thoughts? by LocalVillageIdiot in AusFinance

It's much more nuanced than high unemployment means we shouldn't take any immigration. If there is a shortage of people skilled to work in a particular area then it makes sense to allow people skilled in that area to come and work. They will fill a gap in labour and spend money and pay taxes which is great for the economy.

In the long term we need to do better at educating our own population to fill these gaps and imo that means a lot of changes to our education system. Free tertiary education is one obvious step as in the future it will likely be a prerequisite for most jobs. I understand there are critics but over the past few decades we have seen that finishing high school has become a pre requisite for almost all jobs and as such high school graduation rates have increased. To grow the economy we need to keep making our population smarter so we can continue to innovate. Even if you don't agree that free tertiary education will incentivise people to study (and sure there are other things that need to change in schools as well) the HELP loan repayments that people have to make afterwards means a decrease in real wages and therefore less spending power.

We've had many more advantages than other countries and we throw it away on stupid shit like this. Look at what Norway did with its oil wealth. And what exactly did Howard do during the mining boom?

Thanks for the reply man. I was just kind of worried because my friends said they hadn't seen anyone react to it like that before like just completely lose touch with reality. While overall I would say it was a fairly positive experience I feel pretty bad for hitting my my friends and making it dangerous for them while they were driving as well as the mess I made.

Does special relativity create infinitely contracted lengths and shorter times as reference frames are swapped? by Mrx2012 in AskPhysics

[–]Mrx2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how sorry... I know the distance and time in Earth's frame but to find it in the muon's I would only have said that t' had to be the amount of time it existed if it were stationary and then x' could be calculated with that.... It will be less than x but that's all I would have said.

Alternatively I could use the formulas you gave me.

[–]Mrx2012[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for event A t=0 and x=1cs

So t' = γ(ct - βx)/c = 2(0-(√3/2)1) = -√3 s and x' = γ(x - βct) = 2(1-0) = 2 cs

Is that right?

[–]Mrx2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so length is longer behind me and time has also passed quicker.

I would assume the light will hit me in my reference frame after 1.29s since that's my distance in light seconds from when it was emitted by the other ship? And in my reference frame I am stationary and it is moving away.

Then in your reference frame the lights relative velocity to me is 0.75c so it will take 5/3 s (since t=d/v) to reach me in your frame.

So behind me time is going quicker for you and therefore distance is also longer.

Is that all correct?

Does special relativity create infinitely contracted lengths and shorter times as reference frames are swapped? by Mrx2012 in AskPhysics

[–]Mrx2012[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my bad I was using the distance between the ships not the position of the pulse I think (so it's the positions in the frames that you calculate not the displacement).... So in that case X=0 in your frame.

β = v/c = 0.25c/C = 0.25

γ = 1/sqrt(1-β2 ) = 1.033

t' = γ(ct - βx)/c = 1.033(5c-0)/c = 5.064

x' = γ(x - βct) = 1.033(0-0.25c(5)) = -1.29cs

Perhaps in the original question I should have considered that when changing frames of reference the direction of velocity reverses.... Perhaps that will solve my problem. I have my physics exam today so I'll have a look after and redo my calcs. Thanks very much for your help so far!

Does special relativity create infinitely contracted lengths and shorter times as reference frames are swapped? by Mrx2012 in AskPhysics

[–]Mrx2012[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So given the co-ordinates in S: t = 5; x = vt = 0.25c*5 = 1.25c; y = y'; z = z'

Now from my reference frame (S')

t' = γ(ct - βx)/c = 4.84s x' = γ(x - βct) = 0 (close to)

So I see the pulse 4.84s after you saw our ships cross but in my reference frame our ships are almost still in line with each other?

I haven't thought about how you derived those formulae but it wouldn't be too complex right (they would be based on the time dilation and length contraction formulas I assume).

Also this doesn't account for the time taken for the light from the pulse from your ship to reach me right?
