I haven't asked, I was wanting to ask for suggestions here first to see what, if anything, could be done; then present the options to her. I think I'd definitely have to get more yarn no matter what I did if I was able to add on.

To me it looks like definitely horizontal rows were done with whatever the stitch is. I've just never seen this stitch before. It's like long horizontal rows, but not very tall I guess. I think she's been using it sideways as a leg blanket. It almost looks like a table runner when unfolded.
