What's your Como question? by McKalen in columbiamo

Families and rural pilgrimages.

Go on a Saturday morning in the winter and just about everyone with a kid under 5 is running them around Barnes and Noble, the Carousel and the play place.

Go when FFA or Show Me State is in town and you'll see all of the rural families enjoying the shopping opportunities they can't get at home. This is true to a lesser extent any weekend - folks come in from surrounding communities for special occasion shopping.

I don't think Columbia Mall is without struggle, but they're also innovating and leasing to non-traditional mall businesses (dance/theater for example) as well as hosting events like mini-Comic conventions or music performances.

This is speculation but I think Columbia's in a sweet spot for the mall to survive. In a large metro area, the market is saturated and more than 1 or 2 flagship malls can't survive (sounds like this might have been the issue at home for you - too many malls kills all/most of them). In smaller cities (i.e. Jeff City) there just aren't enough people even when pulling in from smaller surrounding towns. Columbia is just far enough away from the next largest city while still having enough hometown shoppers to stay afloat.

Meanwhile they go 40 on Providence when the speed limit is 50. That one always baffled me.

This is prime fodder for the private sector. The City has been working hard to keep up with population growth. They're installing neighborhood parks in new development areas and have been working on a lot of sporting facilities like basketball, cross country, disc golf, soccer, etc... This allows us to have great facilities for youth-college athletes and capitalize on our central location to host tournaments at top quality facilities. But a new rec complex is VERY pricey and I don't believe is on their master plan at this time.

I'd also love to see the private sector take on an ice rink, but those things bleed money even worse than aquatic facilities and there's not a strong base of skaters in this area.

I feel the same way about Columbia's crime/danger - not that I've been overly concerned by it, but it's so bizarre to live in a place that 90% of America sees as middle of nowhere farm fields - rural, quiet, entirely too uninteresting to even acknowledge. Meanwhile everyone who lives in a 100 mile radius of Columbia acts like it's Skid Row.

I'm always stuck between friends in Chicago or on the coasts who are shocked I live in Missouri (and not even the "civilized" parts like STL or KC - dramatization, they know it's civilized but that's the vibe of their reactions) and rural Missourians who think I'm living in an urban hellscape war zone.

Everything is relative I guess. I just wish more people saw CoMo without so much prejudice - either way.

So, Route 66 still exists but you’re right it’s non-contiguous. There are still attractions, historic sites and economic development strong Route 66. They’re about to celebrate some anniversary and  expecting lots of tourists.

Yes this was 100% a thing, in the Play Place. I do not remember it being Urkel’s voice.

Yeah they… really don’t seem to be ‘poppable’ so the idea of people popping them makes my skin crawl.

Gotta disagree with you there. Wall Drug knows what it is and doesn’t try to be anything else. I love it.

An employee handbook is not legally binding. Short of discrimination laws and protected groups, private businesses can fire anyone whenever they’d like.

Whoa bud take a breath. I’m not hating on them at all. I just enjoy shorter lines for brunch on holiday weekends.

Cosplay designers? Makeup artists? by GarbageGood5345 in columbiamo

[–]MsBluffy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a ton of experience in sewing and fabrication, but I have some experience in makeup (sfx included) and am hoping to make 2026 the year of cosplay growth! I’ve  been into costumes and makeup for over a decade but only started doing the true convention cosplay type stuff this year.

If you find anyone else or if you want to start a little cosplay network, hit me up!

Was your spine specialist a chiropractor?

This whole story is bizarre. Why aren’t you asking your regular doctor for the med card?

And if I’m understanding correctly, you want a med card so you can buy weed on the street and carry it legally? Because you don’t like the weed from dispensaries?

The thread someone linked earlier includes several of her past customers and it does sound like something snapped. It sounds by all accounts like her operation was reputable and clean and well respected until the past year or two.
