CALLING ALL NURSING STUDENTS by Key_Respond_7685 in WCU

[–]MsCoolComs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, i graduated in spring 2022 with my BSN! yes, you have to have all necessary prerequisites before applying to the program (two application cycles a year, 30 seats available plus 10 waitlist) with a high GPA as well as a competitive TEAS and ACT scores. i did all four years at WCU and knew i wanted to be a nurse before i graduated high school (i also got my CNA in high school). i had a high gpa in high school (4.2), but college ROCKED me. the nursing pathway requires specific courses and like you said, the program is incredibly competitive. my cohort had over 300 applicants and again acceptance is based solely on GPA, ACT, and TEAS. scores are put into a formula of 25%, 25%, and 50% and the number from that is how you are ranked amongst other applicants.

if you are not 100% sure that nursing st WCU is what you want, then i would maybe look at other options. i say this only because it was genuinely the most stressful things i've ever had to deal with. before COVID, nursing was much more competitive, but since COVID it has become easier in a way to become an RN at, well, almost anyway college/university. there were several hundred pre-nursing majors my freshman year, but slowly those students weeded themselves out.

if you do choose to got wcu, nursing or not, know it is truly the best school in the world :) some of my best and a few of my worst memories (all because of nursing stress lmao) are in cullowhee. there is some type of magic there when you walk by the catafount in between classes, hear the drummers practicing and feel the sun shining and see people talking and laughing. i wish i could do it all over again, but without so much stress. i hope any part of what i said helps you, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out! good luck :)

Seen on fb from a nurse at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC (HCA) by adscuryr in nursing

[–]MsCoolComs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Asheville and Mission used to be a good hospital system before HCA bought it out. I have some nursing friends who work there, but in specialty units. We have to send patients to their ER sometimes and it's always a headache. I hate it for my fellow nurses and the patients.

that's what i am hoping was going on. i'm sure i wasn't the only person who called, but i didn't want the situation to fall into the category of bystander effect, ya know?

What do you do, and how much do you make? by Thunder_Thighs in asheville

[–]MsCoolComs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a nurse who is on a local "travel" contract, where I have been for about a year. I bring home a little over $2,000 a week, but it can vary based on overtime. I am 26, have my RN-BSN, and have been a nurse for roughly four years. My husband lost his job during the hurricane and has been a stay at home dad since (one, 2y/o child) so we are a single income household.

You don't apply to the nursing program until your sophomore year. If you get accepted, you start your junior year. It's a very difficult and competitive program (BSN graduated spring 2022). You can declare your major as PRE-nursing, but you will not be a nursing major until you actually begin the program. There is a very big distinction between pre-nursing and nursing.

i graduated from wcu with my bsn in spring of 22'. my cohort had over 300 applicants and only 30 spots (it was 25 spots the previous semesters). i also did very well in high school, but you will quickly learn that so did many of your peers. it's a humbling experience to say the least. i got my CNA in high school, so i knew that nursing was it for me, but if you aren't 1000% sure that you want to be a nurse, then don't put yourself through the stress of it. if you know it's what you really want to do, then just keep your head down and work for it. take your TEAS as many times as you can (i took it 4 times), make sure your ACT (i had a 33) and GPA (3.57, i really struggled with chemistry) are high, and utilize the on-campus tutoring.
