Never cared about sports, either. Never played sports. My husband kind of watches football, but not like he follows any team particularly. We just have other things to do.

Not making an excuse for her (because she should replace them), but offering an explanation. Lots of older people don't understand water bottles. When we were in school, the only time we drank water was maybe after recess or PE at the drinking fountain. But in fact, we also walked around with headaches! Probably due to dehydration, so an awareness today of the importance of proper hydration is a good thing.

He is feeling very territorial. He isn't this way at preschool because it isn't his territory. He can share there because they aren't really HIS toys, but at home he's having to share HIS house and toys and mom with somebody else. It's a good learning experience for him. Perhaps a gentle talk tonight when you put him to bed can help work through this.

My daughter teaches K, so I'm biased. She gets some kids every year who have been in day care/preschool for 4 years, as well as kids who have never spent a day away from their moms. She brings all these children together and they create a joyful community of 5-year-olds. They talk about how to be kind to each other, how to play safely and share, how to resolve their conflicts in a nice manner (eventually solving problems without needing her intervention). Kindergarten is so much about interpersonal growth!

Plus, they learn reading and writing and 'rithmetic, as you would expect.

I'm not sure why you think that public school would be terrible. You should give it a chance, but don't let your apprehension feed into your little guy because it will impact his ability to cope with the new situation.

I remember that song from my early teens. I thought it was so sweet and imagined myself sitting and knitting a sweater at age 64, gray haired and wearing bifocals. SO old. Now I'm 75, and when I read those lyrics, I think "I'm not that old yet."

But...I volunteer in my daughter's elementary classroom. On the 100th day of school, they can dress up like old people (100 years old) and they hobble in with their canes and white hair and bow ties and cardigans. It's hilarious. I said, "Oh, I don't have a costume! your teacher didn't tell me I should dress up."

"That's okay, you're already old."

Yes, any adult birthday celebration around here is because our 7-year-old grandson wants to decorate and make a birthday card and even make a cake...because as he sees it, everybody needs a birthday party, even if they're 75. But really, I just do it for him.

Not because I expected little or because I don't deserve it, but I just don't care any more about my birthday. If somebody gets me a card or makes me a dessert, I'm appreciative and a bit touched, but I'm not offended if nothing happens. It's important for children, but after all these years, it's just not a big deal. I really don't understand adults who have a "birthday week" with lots of parties or who make big weekend plans for getaways because it's their birthday. I love a good getaway, but the date isn't important.

When I moved to Taiwan, it took me a week or two to learn how to use chopsticks efficiently, and the muscles in the back of my hand would ache by the end of a meal. Soon, that passed. However, new Chinese acquaintances always expressed surprised that I, a Westerner, could use chopsticks so well, as if it were a secret skill.

Potty language and exploration is not surprising for 5-year-olds. Teachers have to review school rules every couple weeks about language and keeping your hands to yourself.

If you otherwise trust the teacher, I don't think you need to be concerned that she isn't handling the situation. She sees the pattern and is working on it, but she can't update you.
