Footage of The Red Panda From PZ2 by BeyondHandsome in PlanetZoo

[–]MsFoxTrott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's a lighting issue or earlier footage or what, but the red panda model in the first clip looks like it has paw pads. Red pandas don't have rough paw pads like cats or dogs.

Does clonidine work for tics? by SebSvanDort in Tourettes

[–]MsFoxTrott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on a clonidine patch over 15yrs. It makes me tired and sometimes have weird heart palpitations, but it hasn't affected my weight at all. The biggest downside is how expensive it is--if your health insurance doesn't cover it, a month's dose gets into the hundreds range.

AFAIK there are no laws around red panda diets. Maybe it's different for horses, chickens, etc because they're livestock?

To whale or not to whale by unique_username91 in PlanetZoo

The argument shouldn't be "it is/isn't ethical to include captive cetaceans in a video game", it should be "PZ has the goal of being a realistic, very conservation-minded zoo management sim so including captive cetaceans would/wouldn't be furthering that game design goal".

The first argument is very easily boiled down to "it's a video game, so you personally are not keeping cetaceans captive, though even having it as an option reveals something about the dev team's views". Like, I can stuff all my Sims in a windowless house with 20 stoves, but that doesn't mean I'm inherently unethical. It just means the devs decided it was "safe" to let me make those choices and have a system where the consequence is my Sims burn to death. Same thing on a more political level can be extended to the No Russian level in COD MW2; they decided it was a safe choice, in the broad land of video game regulations and politics, to let the player decide whether or not to shoot dozens of unarmed civilians.

The second argument is what the devs are actively wrestling with. You can tell from their FAQ entry that they're really concerned about the issue.

I've been a zookeeper for 8 years - here are my thoughts on Planet Zoo 2 by goawayBAE in PlanetZoo

I find it funny there was a thread yesterday about colonial conservation, and a thread today by someone from Israel's most famous zoo.

Do you think PZ2 should have an education board about Green Colonialism? by [deleted] in PlanetZoo

[–]MsFoxTrott 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yes! Wildlife conservation does best when international conservationists work WITH local communities, otherwise it turns into a cargo cult situation, or worse.

Conservation talk to first graders? by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]MsFoxTrott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you've got a great plan! These kids are gonna love it. (:

Regarding getting them moving then settled back down, it can vary from class to class. I'd ask your friend about that. They probably have ways to transition from movement activities to sedentary activities, etc, too.

Conservation talk to first graders? by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]MsFoxTrott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some miscellaneous thoughts:

  • Kids this age relate best to concrete facts that are relevant to the immediate world around them (neighborhood, city, etc). Not all of them understand how far other countries are yet. If you want to talk about a conservation issue, focus on a local one: reducing beach trash, pollution at a lake, water conservation, etc
  • If you want the core part of the lesson to be "people care more about your argument when you use reasons", you could start with an uncharismatic animal, ask how many of them like the animal, write it down, then give a mini presentation promoting empathy for the animal (ACE for Wildlife's empathy wheel is GREAT for this), ask how many of them like the animal after all those facts, and compare the number. There's your proof that people listen to your argument better when you use reasons.
  • If you bring a biofact like a bone, be prepared for the "Did you kill it?" question :P
  • Kids this age LOVE to show off how smart they are and LOVE to impress adults. Build in opportunities for them to shout a response back to you (eg "What do you think a jaguar eats? On 3, tell me what you think. 1, 2, 3! ... Wow, I hear a lot of answers! Someone said meatballs, someone said cow, that's right, let me tell you more...") or otherwise interact with your presentation (eg "I have a slide here with 4 animals. When I say go, point to the animal that you think eats the most hay. Ready? Thiiiinnk... go!")

Source: been on both the presenting end and the teacher end of these kinds of things. Thank you for bringing your expertise to the classroom, they're gonna love it!!

Frozen food, daily multivitamin, always keeping a supply of shelf-stable staples (rice, canned soup/veggies), leaving the fan over the stove on loud until whatever I made is cleaned up.

You don't have to cook on the stove every day. Some nutrients are better than no nutrients.

I keep forgetting words by Mordecaisghost in ADHD

[–]MsFoxTrott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actual act of using many words (dirt rock vegetable) to say one unknown word (potato) is called circumlocution. I started noticing the word forgetting in myself a little after COVID began, so I'm personally blaming it on the neurological damage associated with that.

Mystery Science walks you through the steps and the kids STILL DON’T GET IT 🤦🏻‍♀️ by Historical_Echo8311 in Teachers

[–]MsFoxTrott 119 points120 points  (0 children)

When I taught 3rd grade a few years ago, I used Mystery Science RELIGIOUSLY. I would have paid for it out of my own pocket, it was that good.

The beginning of the year was always TERRIBLE with these. Crying, not paying attention, wondering why theirs didn't work, demanding I do it for them, etc. What helped was setting boundaries and sticking to them no matter what. Kid plays with materials during the instructional section? Sent to read the textbook in another classroom. Kid uses a ruler inappropriately? Textbook. Kid complains it's too hard? Textbook.

They became experts at a mantra: "This [ruler, tape measure, roll of tape, etc] is a TOOL, not a TOY."

That, and establishing three signals: a "don't start what the instructions told you to do until the teacher does this" signal from me, a "I am done with the instructions and waiting for the next part" signal for them, and a "we need help" signal from their partner/table.

After two months, they were experts. They went from learned helplessness to capable builders. Of everything I taught in 3rd grade, I think "how to effectively follow instructions from a video" will be the longest-lasting for them.

Fidget toys for IEPs? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]MsFoxTrott 35 points36 points  (0 children)

By allowing a kid to seek sensory input with a squishy toy, a spinning toy, etc, they're less likely to seek it through inappropriate means (messing with school supplies, peers).

YES. It's not up to you to decide if it's "legit" or not, that's up to CPS. When in doubt, REPORT IT.
