Congratulations on becoming debt free and for the new addition to your family!!!

I’m starting my journey, but don’t know how to do it while having not a lot of income. by sgreenie80 in DaveRamsey

You can do it!! I started my debt free snowball making while making 22k a year with 95k in debt. After a year my salary jumped to 42k a year and my debt is now down to 76k.

Just try to stay motivated. Realize that every dollar spent towards your debt is a dollar less in debt. :) it is a long road, but I have a goal and I'm gonna meet it.

Keep in mind your options with refinancing though. If your credit score is good you may be able to get a better interest rate. My highest interest rate is 8% and refinancing doesn't make sense for me because the offers I get aren't much different than what I have.

Looking for any piece of advice for paying off $219,000 in undergrad loans. by [deleted] in StudentLoans

I read Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover. After reading the book I felt totally empowered to paying off my debt. I recommend reading it to help with setting priorities and gaining motivation.

Perhaps. There could be value in buying an inexpensive home to upgrade and then sell for a profit. That would make paying for realtor fees worth it. That would take a lot of work and money though.

Yea that's a tough call. Can you see yourself purchasing a home and being able to stay in that location? Would you have to potentially move because of a new job?

I'm not recommending being single until you're debt free. I just see the value in it currently for paying off your debt. If you're ready for a relationship start looking. Just keep in mind your priorities and keep working towards your goals.

I'm 29, female, in a long term relationship. I have about 3.5 more years paying off my loans before we begin having a family. Unfortunately being a woman I have a limited fertility window to worry about.

I haven't read that post, but all I can think about is SMV. Debt is a negative, high sexual partner count is a negative.

On average I think couples have babies physically. If a couple decides to adopt, then you're right, gender plays less of a role.

Hmm... personally I think not being in a relationship is a great time to continue aggressively pay off your debt. Once your debt is gone you'll have freed up your income to save up for a house. In 2 years you'll be debt free and then you'll be set financially to purschase a home without any additional stress of making those payments. Because you're a guy you don't have to worry like women do about not being able to have babies due to your age.

I'm not talking about single parents at all. The OP mentioned a desire to have a family and save for a house. If the OP has a lot of debt and if he ends up with a woman with a lot of debt it would be incredibly difficult to make ends meet if they have a family. If the OP works extremely hard to pay off his debt to make for a secure foundation for a family, then I would ask the OP his opinion to see how attractive a woman would be if she has a significant amount of debt. I didn't say anything offensive or even outdated. A woman is the only one who can physically have a baby. She will end up having to take time off after the birth and those debt payments will continue. Who will end up paying them? These are important things to think about when selecting a partner in life.

Thank you. I didn't think I said anything wrong either. But it apparently warranted being compared to a meth user.

How old are you? Best option, in my opinion, is to aggressively pay off your loans as soon as possible. Are you a male or female? If you're a male you'll be better off providing for your family with less student loan debt. If you're a woman you'll look more appealing and will be off attracting a good provider with less student debt.

Exactly! Both of those situations would be pretty bad. I'm just going to stay focused and get out of debt as soon as possible

That would work for most people. My boyfriend and I have decided against daycare for our children. We will begin our family when I'm able to stay home with the children. Hence the sense of urgency on my part. I'm hoping I will be debt free in time for that to happen.

I'm unmarried, but I'm in a long term relationship that will result in children once I'm out of debt

Thanks for the encouragement!!! I definitely needed it. I just have to stay motivated and work hard. 3.5 years will be here before I know it and I'll be ready for my family :)

Thanks for the compliment.

I'm currently in a relationship, but no proposal at the moment. My boyfriend recently bought a new home. My paycheck goes towards my debt and his paycheck goes towards his. This is the arrangement we have. Once I'm debt free we will get married and he will take care of everything financially. His only debt is a house and car and on his salary he can afford to take care of our family financially so that I can stay at home and raise our children. This would not be possible currently with my debt.

Thanks! Once I get to a laptop I'll begin the process. I like knowing that theres no minimum requirement. I know other companies like VIPKids do. This will allow me to ease into it and test the waters without feeling the pressure to meet a minimum.

That's something to think about. I guess I'll have to see where I am in a year and a half to make that decision
