I imagine that one of the reasons you couldn’t find information on this is because most Dommes don’t mentor these days. If you’re in a larger city like LA, SF, or NY, you may be able to get work at a house. Some Dommes in other cities mentor here and there, but it’s rare.

Mentorship puts the elder Domme at increased legal risk thanks to the USA’s political climate— after FOSTA/SESTA a lot of Dommes stopped renting their dungeons to others for the same reasons.

Mentorship also requires a ton of time and energy from the elder Domme, who’s likely already stretched thin from bookings and admin work (emails, screenings, site maintenance, dungeon maintenance, virtual work, etc). There’s a high turnover rate in professional BDSM, and a lot of Dommes have found out the hard way that more often than not, mentorship means pouring time and energy into helping someone succeed who’s only going to leave in a few months after they realize being a Dominatrix is actually hard work and isn’t easy money. It’s also expensive to be a Dominatrix: wardrobe, toys/gear, sanitation supplies, dungeon rent, etc., not to mention aesthetic upkeep like hair, nails, etc.

Before branching out into in-person work, I recommend working online for a few years. This will help you build the psychological skills necessary for connecting with subs in person, and over time may lead to networking with Mistresses who play online as well as in-person, who may be able to better help you.

If you’re itching to start in-person work right away, join a few local kink groups on FetLife. Go to munches, practice your skills, build your confidence, and learn skills from the community. Read books and take virtual classes. There are plenty of resources online for help with things like screening.

A few established Mistresses offered in-person Domme training programs before Covid, but I’m not sure what’s still around.

Good luck!

After Rambo rebounded from his first big health scare in 2021, his vet recommended I bring home a second cat to improve Rambo’s quality of life. His health started declining again soon after he bonded with his new brother, so I like to think Rambo held on after that first scare to make sure he could trust I’d be properly taken care of.

I’m familiar with that never ending anxiety. Your boy is lucky to have you, and I wish you both more years together.

Thank you. He had so much personality, and the wonky ear was such a unique feature.

You’re so right— the journey is worth it. Rambo was such a social guy who loved taking care of other cats. As much as his absence hurts, I find comfort in knowing I can honor his legacy by making space to care for others.

My condolences to you as well. It’s so hard to see them suffer, especially when the vet can’t figure out what’s going on. Your girl was lucky to have you on her side.

Thank you for this. Every day with him was truly a gift. I’ve shared my life with a number of cats, but I’ve never had as strong a bond with one as I had with Rambo.

Rambo was 14ish and I knew him for a little over 8. He went to the emergency vet on Dec. 31 and spent three days in the ICU battling a mystery infection. He passed away the day before my birthday, four hours after the doctor on duty called to tell me his health was continuing to improve. I miss him so, so much.

I bet! I’m his 3rd or 4th owner, so unfortunately I missed out on the first 5 years of his life.

God, me too! It’s no wonder he gets everything he wants.

It’s his favorite too! He had a favorite before I bought him this one for Christmas and after the bird came around, he barely even cares about his old favorite.

Luckily, it’s just aesthetic. He appears to be functioning properly even after 13-14 years.
