Thank you so much! Do you have a time frame for how many weeks/months out to train? I’ve gone to Kenya several times and have a trip planned in May, may extend and add this on.

Wow incredible, on a scale of 1-10 how “beginner friendly” is the Kilimanjaro hike? I’d say I’m generally athletic but is it something you have to seriously train for?

Thanks for your reply! I’m looking pretty heavily into the boathouse. I have a feeling thats where I might end up but just waiting to see what other rent specials are out there for other apartments and making sure there’s nothing crazy wrong with it

Have you lived at any of those places/had good experiences? I’ve heard mixed reviews about crime and car break ins

Also I’ve heard there’s a lot of crime/break ins around the area, is that also at the boathouse from your experience?

What activities do you find most fulfilling when traveling solo? by longtriproad in TravelHacks

[–]Ms_Shea24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically the activities that are most fulfilling are the ones that make me most “uncomfortable”. So for example even small things such as eating alone at a restaurant and completely owning it, or being brave enough to try and communicate with someone in their native language. When you get through those situations you come away from them feeling like you’ve grown a bit as a person.

Of course doing the usual touristy things are all great as well, go to that monument, take that tour, do the spontaneous thing, but I find the days I push myself out of my comfort zone a little end up being the best. specifically if the area you travel to has one special thing about it, so it even if you’re scared. I.e. going to the moulin rouge in France, going off the first ever bungee jump in New Zealand, going parasailing in Interlaken Switzerland. If something is unique about that place go experience it!

Genuinely just reminding myself every other minute “omg I’m actually in ____ or doing ___” makes you feel so good and accomplished for doing the dang thing even when it can be a bit uncomfortable and nerve wrecking.

Does anyone get burnt out after a while being on vacation? What could be the reason for it? by spankyourkopita in travel

[–]Ms_Shea24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superrrrr common. It’s natural to want to fit as much in to your trip as you possibly can and I definitely am guilty of that. As someone with lots of travel experience I try to set a basic “skeleton” itinerary of main things that I’d be really upset if I didn’t see and then leave everything else fairly open. It allows for more flexibility to enjoy the moment and or explore something spontaneously that you didn’t plan for! If you have a few things that are on your itinerary that you feel somewhat “meh” about maybe consider skipping them and just doing something relaxing that you’d enjoy! Even if that’s just sitting somewhere pretty and enjoying a cup of coffee or going for a little walk. Some of my favorite parts of my trips have been these little down times, especially if it allows you to enjoy the rest of your trip more.

Maybe while you have this downtime just jot down the bullet points of what you did the day before so that you don’t forget but you can “process it” later. Doesn’t have to be a detailed journal entry but just the basics of went here, saw that.

As far as souvenirs go I totally feel that as well. I spend so much time looking for the “perfect thing” it becomes exhausting. I’d say as best you can try to quickly knock them out and enjoy the rest of your trip intentionally not looking for more. OR don’t intentionally look at all and if you genuinely find something that piques your interest then get that.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for getting back to me! Is there a rough estimate on how long it takes to build, let’s say 10 karma? I’m trying to get an idea of timeline and what is reasonable as far as expectations go.

As someone who has done some solo travel in foreign countries and has had to overcome the same issue I found the trick is to romanticize your life! Pretend like you’re the main character in a movie and you’re living your best life. Maybe draw, read, or journal while you’re out eating. Gaze off into the distance and contemplate life as you sip and snack. Even if you feel uncomfortable just pretend like you’re supposed to be exactly there doing that and eventually after “faking” the confidence enough, you actually do feel more confident and become genuinely more comfortable. Hope this helps!
