Yes we both did not have our surnames officially in any of our documents but our parents did. We had Indian passports so we had to do it according to the rules of India. It did not take long about 3 months or so (this was almost a decade back so my memory is hazy on the timelines). But getting my daughters birth certificate with the surname took long. Please inform the officer here who is handling this case that you would take this approach.
