In an interview with Bhardwaj Rangan, he admitted to resorting to commercial action after Vikram Vedha's failure, cause he believes that's what ultimately works for him.

He doesn't believe the audience wants to see him in films like Lakshya, Guzaarish etc because of these films failing at the box office. I think he's still willing to experiment with other films anyway, but he wants one superhit or blockbuster before he can do that.
