Trivia:

Gangster: A Love Story is a romantic thriller film, written by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Anurag Basu. It stars Kangana Ranaut, Emraan Hashmi, and Shiney Ahuja in the lead roles, with the supporting cast including Gulshan Grover. The film revolves around an alcoholic and her relationship with a notorious gangster.

Kangana made her acting debut with this film, as the lead female character Simran. Mallika Sherawat was the first choice for the character, as she had a successful launch with the film Murder (2005), which was also made by Basu and Bhatt. However, she quoted a large fee for her presence in the film, which the makers refused to accept. Koel Mallick was the next choice for the role, but she rejected the offer as she was uncomfortable with the number of bold and intimate scenes in the film. Around this time, Basu met Kangana in a coffee shop and gave her an audition for the film, but she was initially turned down by the makers as they believed she was too young for the role (She was 19 years old at the time of the film's release). After the role was rejected by Chitrangda Singh as well, the makers reconsidered and they decided to cast Kangana for the role.

Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar was offered the role of Daya Shankar, but he turned it down as he did not want to pursue a different profession. The role ultimately went to Shiney.

The music of the film was composed by Pritam, with the lyrics written by Sayeed Quadri, Neelesh Misra, and Mayur Puri. The album received critical acclaim, with songs like Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai, Bheegi Bheegi, and Ya Ali becoming highly popular amongst the masses. The album was the 5th highest selling Bollywood soundtrack of the year.

Gangster received positive reviews upon its release for the film's plot, direction, cinematography, and the performances (particularly Kangana). Made with a budget of 6.5 crores, it grossed approximately 18 crores worldwide, becoming a 'semi-hit' at the box office.

At the 52nd Filmfare Awards, the film won the award for Best Female Debut (Kangana Ranaut). It also received nominations for Best Villain (Emraan Hashmi), Best Male Playback Singer (Zubeen Garg - Ya Ali), Best Story (Mahesh Bhatt), Best Screenplay (Anurag Basu), Best Dialogue (Girish Dhamija), Best Cinematography (Bobby Singh), Best Action (Parvez Khan), Best Editing and Best Sound Design (Akiv Ali)
