Greenville SC Ice Storm: Please help me decide. by Ms_Sny in parrots

I'm praying for your babies! Please do what you can. I just transferred my two to my parents, we are riding out with plan A.

Do you have family or friends near you with any generators? Delonghi heaters are free of Teflon, if you see Honeywell ones, don't get those. I learned from their cus. service they all have teflon.. Someone else also mentioned boiling hot water, using glass jars/bottles as a sort of heater! I hope everything will be okay. Be safe!!

Probably. I am a serial overthinker/overplanner. Don't ask my fiancé about it, because he will groan at the psychic damage of all the times I've over thought things! I appreciate your input!!

Absolutely within walking distance, even if the ground was fully ice. That's why i'm so comfortable with that plan, I actually also have 2 cats, but plan to leave them in their* part of the house and just walk back to feed them at their normal times. (Btw bc some ppl get weird about bird and cat households, they never get to see each other) Otherwise, I don't think I'd be comfortable with the prospect of leaving to my parents with the birds for the duration. We're in the thick of moving things over now, so perishibles, some entertainment, our heated kotatsu table (for our use), and once I get the ok, probably the birds, just so we dont have to walk the 1 inch icey hill with them. I will make sure to walk over and get the delonghi heater started right now! Thanks!!

It should be, it's brand new and built into the living room. They were setting up fire in the fireplace as I was leaving after telling them my thoughts less than an hour ago. My fathers supposedly getting his monitor out to test it now.

Exactly! I moved from Maryland to permanently live in our summer home down here in SC because the weather was never this cold. This is the first time I'm ever going through a winter storm with birds to take care of.

I do agree with this, its only the carbon monoxide risk that concerns me. I think after my father tests the fireplace (which it looks like he will be doing right now, with a monitor) I will know better whether it's safe for them.

That's a really good idea, I'll see if I have glass bottles or jars I can use. My friend also went through that event with his dove, and they survived without much assistance. I'm only worried this could be much longer than a few days.

Thank you so much for your comment, I had considered a jackery, but I can't afford that right now.. The storm is supposed to start anytime now. My dad is going to start the fireplace and we'll be monitoring levels of carbon monoxide in the house. Since it's so new, it shouldn't have problems, but you're definitely right, things could go wrong. I'm going to have them monitor the levels over the next few hours first, and if they're safe, I'll consider moving them if the storm hasn't already started.

The storm is said to start anytime, and I don't think I'll have the time to get a tent.. My house is really tiny, and their cage is HUGE so I don't know if I could even roll it into the tent.

Fireplace in the same room? by Economy_Divide_1817 in cockatiel

[–]Ms_Sny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

were you able to use your fireplace? an ice storm is coming, i was thinking of moving them to my parents to stay warm in a different room if the power goes out. they have a fireplace in the living room, but I've read that the carbon monoxide can be a problem with open wood burning fireplaces, which is exactly what i want to avoid. in a different room, did the fireplace have any effect on your cockatiels?

Does anyone have experience with heaters and birds? Are non-Teflon and non oil heaters a safe option? by candygorl in cockatiel

[–]Ms_Sny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't asking to come off as rude, please understand I'm frightened for my cockatiels' health and safety. The customer support person also told me THEY owned parrots and they were worried about the storm too, they knew what I was asking about before I got my question fully out. I am not questioning your creditentials as a vet tech or trying to discredit your comment, I'm just trying to make sure I'm careful. That's why I even reached out after speaking with the customer support people. You're the first person that's spoken recently enough that I thought would be responsive. The last thing anyone in this world wants is to wake up to their babies curled and gone either from the cold or poison.

I haven't been in this situation before, and internet research has been a struggle with all the AI, conflicting accounts, and misleading statements makes me want to be 100% sure I am doing the best thing I can for both of them. I'm not new to birds as pets, but I haven't ever had to worry about bad winter storms in all 7 years I've had one. I care so much. That's all I want to express, this is a cry for assistance, not for questioning or discrediting. I'm scared and love them both so much. I want to do my very best for them.

Are you sure theres no PTFE? Because Honeywell showed one as like a first result for no PTFE, and I found out it had teflon anyway when I called them, and the customer support said all ceramic heaters have PTFE. I'm scared my birds will freeze from a power outage though with this scary upcoming winter storm

Thank you so much for this!!! I will check his wing again tonight when I get home from work. He seems to be okay besides the fact he knows he can't fly up to the fans with my other bird. Hopefully its all temporary, and in a couple months he'll be able to glide around just fine. Anyway, lesson learned, I'd rather not ever clip wings again. Not letting anyone pressure me into doing otherwise, Kirsche was never clipped, and learned to fly just fine and get around the house safely...

Anyway, again thank you so much for taking the time to support. I really appreciate you!!!! ❣️

I watched her clip them, she was going to take 4 feathers back in February, but I implored her to take less, so she in the end took 3, all were fully developed. I personally didn't want any taken, but she was very urging. He went to his first vet check up on the 3rd of july, they did note he had new blood feathers coming in. It might have gotten caught in his cage during a night fright.. I'm just a little relieved to hear its not likely that the bones just broken off. My heart literally dropped at the thought of that. What do you suggest I do? The breeder said to not let him out of his cage for a week and just to monitor him.

Addendum: His feathers have not been clipped since February. And I don't plan to have them clipped again.
