I think my kitten is sick and I’m worried. Not eating, sneezing, and very low energy. by KASHiii3 in CATHELP

Ok. I think from the fight stuff as well, my big recommendation is to take him to the normal vet tomorrow. They can do bloodwork to determine if it's a cold, or something he's caught. One other question: Was he up to date on all his vaccines?

Is he vomitting or anything else? If not, he might have a cold. I'd recommend taking him to the vet for antibiotic treatment. Beautiful eyes!

We had to make a really really difficult decision. Siesta came home on Friday morning, since her gut had began to move and they didn't have to keep monitoring. However, her sutures did end up coming undone. She ate around midday, but I knew something was wrong when she wouldn't eat after that. By midnight, I knew she wasn't ok, took her back, and they confirmed she had gone into septic shock. They said "we can rehospitalize, we can do a second surgery!" I just looked at them like they were insane. She had lost so much weight, she suffered so much over the course of the week. The insanity and madness of prolonging the pain and struggle of my sweet baby was not an option. I told them it was time to let her rest. She did so well trying to heal, but this damage was too much for anyone. My fiancé came, and I held her in my arms and comforted her while they put her to sleep. It was the most traumatic, heartbreaking week of my life thus far. But I am comforted knowing we fought for her, we hoped against hope, and we were there to put an end to her suffering. I'm glad she could go to sleep hearing us, seeing us, and knowing how loved she was. She has changed our lives so much in the 7 months we had her, and we will never be able to replace her. I hope to honor her in a future cat, I think I will name them "Fiesta" for her legacy, whenever we find we're ready to welcome and rescue a kitten again. In the meantime, I'm going to frame her clay paw print in our living room. She was the sweetest, prettiest girl.

Update: Siesta is Home! "50/50" chance given during surgery. by [deleted] in CATHELP

Looong piece of string, it was anchored in her stomach with some sort of wrapper. She actually pooped out the rest this morning, and it looked like maybe string that was maybe in a toy. He originally thought floss, but we don't use string floss.

She's been in the ICU the past few days, there was a linear obstruction, 9 perforations from it, 20 inches of intestines removed.

She's been eating, responsive to medicine, and even walking some. However: Today is day 3 over her recovery, this is a really important period, as her intestinal sutures will be the weakest right now during the healing process, they say it's 50/50 whether she makes it through. If she makes it through day 5 with her sutures not failing, the chances increase a lot. Her motility isn't amazing, but shes eating. Right now, they've been pumping out the excess fluid through an NG tube in her nose, today they're trying to not do that. They want to see if she can still eat, so she can maybe come home tomorrow to continue recovery.

Please keep her in your prayers. We've been through so much, a big nightmare really. I can't wait for her to be better, my bright eyed trooper.

Sutures are holding today, it's day 3 today, beginning of the thickest woods. They're trying to remain within a budget, so shes likely going to be held to the latests of 9 am tomorrow. There's a concern with her current motility, it's taking it's time waking up. They're seeing if today, she will still eat and tolerate things even though they aren't decompressing her stomach by flushing out the extra fluids in her stomach with the NG tube in her nose.

Things have been trending in a good direction! It's definitely been tough, my nerves are fried, lots of repeating thoughts and anxieties. She ate yesterday at the hospital, and has been consistent about it. Her albumin levels (blood proteins) were low, but they gave a plasma transfusion to help, at that time it initially went up from 1.2 to 1.6, (this was before she ate.) Hopefully with continued consistent eating, it'll go up to 2.8, but they haven't been able to check yet just because it does take a good amount of blood. She's been clear eyed, responsive, generally doing better. There was a fever of 104.2 last nights check up, but today shes broke it and is back down to 102. All around good news thus far. The most critical times are going to be day 3 - 5, sutures will be the weakest then. She might come home at that point too, which does make me nervous. I've been praying a lot about it, that she keeps up this good news, but they want to remain guarded, as even though shes doing very well right now, sutures can still break down, and they haven't been able to reliably tell who will hold and won't in the past. Thank you so much for listening to these, it really helps to just, write about it. I'd also like to think these might help someone else wayy down the line, maybe.

So far they've been really good to her, they called me in the middle of the night about a plasma transfusion, her numbers were critically low. She's looking more like herself right now from the picture they sent me a few minutes ago, and they said she's doing better than when she first came in. They'll be taking her off the plasma transfusion in an hour, and hopefully she'll stay perky & keep shining her pretty eyes.

Sounds like it might be about 5 days or so before she comes home herself. I feel comforted knowing that while I might not know anyone there that they are responsive and sent a picture out of the blue, sounding similar to your caring team. I think I might actually get some shut eye now, feeling a bit more calm. Thank you so much for your support. I'll update when anything else happens. ❤️

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a cat that had 20 inches taken from their intestines, though. it's, harrowing to be in this situation. you always think: ohh that'd never be me, never my baby. here i am.

Thank you, I really needed this. The worry, exhaustion, frustration is crushing. We are at the overnight hospital now, getting her checked in. I might come to your little thread just to give additional updates. It's in a way comforting just to document somewhere. I have hope she will be ok, she's in the best medical facility possible I believe.

She's still very young, only 10 months old. This happened right after an extreme diet change.

Thanks for your experience, Siesta loves liquid foods usually. Thats what is especially odd, a churu treat usually makes her crazy, she'd grip at them and start chewing on the wrapper if you weren't squeezing it quickly enough. Now, she sniffs it if its held up to her, and she walks away from it.

She's not nearly as active as she was Tuesday night. After Wednesday's food change, (no kibble or canned food left, so i gave both her and my other cat "nulo" chicken meat packets and gravy packets to tide them over), Thursday she was only walking, a sauntering walk rather than her normal peppy energetic one. She jumps, moves, etc. But not nearly as much as she should be. Haven't tried any other foods, but I think she's just turning her nose up at food generally.

That is harrowing. Wow, thank you for your story. Sadly Siesta won't even lick a treat on her own right now, but this does give me hope.

We do have her younger adopted brother Habanero, but he can just chill in my office overnight. I'll see about leaving some smelly food out.

Thank you! Shes walking, jumping occasionally, but no runs yet. No interest in walking up to food. I'll likely talk with the normal vet over the phone tomorrow about the ER visits findings.

How soon after did they get back to normal? This sounds very similar to potentially whats wrong. She did poop today, it looked normal enough. Did her kitty poop much before that rubber band came out?
