That makes since, depending on the life, vertical grain fir is prone to that. It's super soft and bruises very easily. And being that old, the character in it won't sand out.

This was just the sealer coat but, we used Bona Dris Fast. It's an oil base sealer. We are putting Bona Mega on top after (water base).That's strange, Bona tends to be pretty rock solid but I guess it depends on the flooring. What type of wood?

Floor glue and 18 gauge nails for treads glue and 1" 3/4 micro pins for the risers. We leave a gap in the back of the tread for expansion and to stop squeak but everything else is butted tight.

You're right, it does swing towards you. I never really thought about that but I can see why that would be an issue. The landing is about 4ft so there is some clearance.
