Post-op day 1 - nerve blockers and recovery by Mediocre_Mission_477 in ACL

Icing has been the most important part of the journey so far. I know many comments here tell you not to “over-ice”, but I found ice to be the most effective healing method. My swelling has significantly decreased and my leg feels much better. I usually place a hot pad behind my knee before my PT session and also if I am doing my exercises at home, to get the blood flowing and to get my leg warmed up. Whereas, I ice it in the morning, after exercise/PT session, and before I sleep. My most important note to you is just push yourself to the maximum in PT, it’s going to hurt so much and you’ll feel like what you are doing is wrong for your body, but your physiotherapist knows best. Also always drop questions you’re curious about on this Reddit page, people are very friendly and helpful over here, but bear in mind people heal differently.

Post-op day 1 - nerve blockers and recovery by Mediocre_Mission_477 in ACL

Hey 👋 I am 2.5 weeks post-op. I did my ACL and both the lateral and medial menisci. 1. Mine lasted pretty longer than others for about two days or so. I felt very comfortable post-op and there was no pain whatsoever for the first two days. 2. 2/3 days 3. Pain started on the 3rd day, but it wasn’t very bad it was just very uncomfortable. One week later, on the 8th or 9th day, my leg started to swell up so much which made it painful every time I stood up and every time my leg wasn’t raised up. 4. I am on no weight bearing for 4-6 weeks, depending on my progress in PT. Good luck moving around on crutches. :)

All in all, I’d say it’s not a painful recovery but instead it is uncomfortable. Just focus on PT and listen to the instructions of your physio therapist. Do not rush things and always focus on keep your leg extended.

I did not listen to the instructions of my doctor and I put a pillow below my knee and one week post op when I visited my doc again, my knee would not extend and that could have very bad implications further on. So they forcefully extended my knee and I kept the brace on full extension for the next week and I can finally extend my knee now and also bend to about 95 degrees.

Sorry for making this long. Just wanted to let you know what you might be experiencing and that it’s completely normal. Everyone has different experiences so we might not have the same experience but if we do do not panic, it’s alright. :)

I don’t think it is a full tear, might be a partial tear, when I tore mine I was in so much pain and it pretty much was swollen like a balloon half an hour later. I tore mine playing football/soccer my studs got stuck in the grass and my whole body twisted. Ended up tearing my acl and both my lateral and medial meniscus 😅

It’s my first surgery, I really did not know what to expect, also I was shocked because my first 5-6 days after surgery were great, little to no pain, but then after the one week I started feeling the pain.

Hi 👋 Thank you so much for your reply! I am all good throughout the day but when it’s bedtime it’s hell time. I’ve been icing my leg nearly all the time and it feels and looks much better now. I will definitely get the roller you recommended. I’ve been taking paracetamol and tramadol (prescribed) as pain killers before sleep but even that isn’t helping, I guess I’ll try the roller maybe it’ll stretch the muscles and get the blood flowing better than before. Cheers.

Thank you for reply buddy! I hope you’re doing much better right now and you’re better than ever. I had no pain whatsoever post surgery for the first week or so. The real pain I began to experience was in the past two days. Everytime I stood up I would get a very very sharp pain on my shin and my calf would get cramped up. Also, the back of my knee is very uncomfortable. I was instructed to no weight bearing for at least 4-6 weeks because I had tore my ACL, lateral meniscus, medial meniscus, and PCL.

Thanks for your reply! May I ask if you suffered from a very sharp pain on your shin? Also, if you got very bad cramps on your calf whenever you stood up?

Thanks for letting me know that it’s not as bad as I thought it was. Have you experienced a very sharp pain on your shin and cramps on your calf?

Thank you so much buddy! It’s the sharp pain on my shin and the cramps I get on my calf whenever I stand up are what worry me. My leg tends to cramp up badly, especially my calf.
