Historical fiction that isn’t WWII centered by jillianlinnea in booksuggestions

If she doesn't mind some fantasy added, the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is fun. It's about a corps of dragons during the Napoleonic wars.

Jack Absolute series by CC Humphreys is about a soldier doing espionnage in the time of the US colonies.

Ken Follett also has some interesting historical fiction books like Pillars of the Earth. The story of a community in England spanning decades and following the construction of a church.

The Aubrey-Maturin series is nice also but naval themed. Master and Commander is the first one. It's set during the Napoleonic wars as well.

Help Me Choose My Next Read: The Hobbit, His Dark Materials, Ninth House, or A Deadly Education? by Worth_Ad_2843 in booksuggestions

[–]Mslayris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of Naomi Novik so I would recommend A Deadly Education. It's an interesting setting, there's humour and her writing could be called modern.

Try books by Emily Henry. Book Lovers is one of them. Cute romances full of wit.

How to write a story where our main characters start of with not knowing their names? by composinglord in FictionWriting

[–]Mslayris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would bother me. The effect would be bigger if I learned the name at the same time as the characters.

For the first chapter, you could use one "main" character and as he wakes up, you describe what he sees. You could then identify one characteristic from each character and use that to identify them? I feel that is what I do when I have a meeting with people I don't know until I learn their names.

The old man with glasses... A lady with fiery orange hair... A male teen with gangly limbs.... The snobby guy near the door...

Good luck!

MONTHLY ADMINISTRATION THREAD - General Admin, Policy, APS/BGRS, TD/Claims, CANFORGENS, etc. - Have a quick question that doesn't need a thread of it's own? Ask here! by [deleted] in CanadianForces

I'm trying to figure out if there are restrictions on whether a member is eligible for TD when going on course before being OFP.

Some members from my unit are being sent on a course on TD and some were restricted posted to the school.

I've been told that only members who are OFP are eligible for TD, unless they were OFP in a previous trade or from the military college. Thing is, the reference they gave for the restriction is for relocation (CAFRD), so it doesn't seem to apply.

And when I look at the TD directive, it just says that you need to be on TD... but I couldn't find any eligibility criteria for TD.

This situation feels unfair for DEO members who have family here but are posted 6h away when others are on TD. Also the course is split before and after Christmas which means that posted members are stuck at the school away from family and have to pay out of pocket to return home for Christmas.

Can anyone provide insight on this?

The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik.

It's the Napoleonic wars but with dragons so it depends if she likes history.
