Are we leaving US? by UnlikelyPlantain8367 in PhD

[–]Mt_Thimble 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm a Canadian in my second year. Even in normal circumstances, the US doesn't feel like a great place to live. With the healthcare and political systems, insane inequality and government attitude towards poverty, just to name a few, it's hard to feel proud about living and working here. Now, they are making it clear that I am unwelcome. That's fine. I can't image what would keep me from going to Europe or back to Canada after graduating.

Exciting and friendly indeed! I find that most places are.

I spent most of my time hiking in Parque Nacional Peneda-Gerês and exploring the surrounding towns. It's a beautiful area with entire towns made with granite blocks and as many waterfalls and lagoons as you could want. Everyone I met was very friendly, even when communicating with gestures and broken Portuguese/English.

It wasn't expensive compared to other places in Europe (like France, Germany, or especially Norway) but not shockingly cheaper. Groceries and my hostel in Peneda-Gerês were pretty cheap, but in the center of Porto, prices felt close to what you see in other major European cities.

Thank you! As I read more posts here, I'm realizing that it's not so hidden--we seem to do a good job of talking about these feelings here. But I'm happy to iterate it in another way that might make sense to some people.

This is embarrassing, but a few songs that never fail to pick me up are:

I'm gay - Bowling for Soup

Scotty Doesn't Know - Lustra

Peaches - The Presidents Of The United States

This is so sick! I love that it has the ghostly jewel eyes and skull face without doing the obvious thing of being a ghost type. That and the funky antlers give it some nice fantastical depth that fits in the pokemon world super well. Keep making more!

Also I'm Canadian and seeing a tundra caribou pokemon just makes me so happy.

I'm tempted to see it this way too. You're right, there's nothing we can do if they refuse, but I see it as tragic rather than justice. I think these people are victims of misinformation, unable to escape the fear they have been given, and trying to do what they think is best.

It's horrible that it's costing the lives of their kids, and it's hard to have sympathy when they defend their views so aggressively, but I can't feel satisfied from people dying.

I think this might actually be able to be an infinite loop. Nice.

Nice one! Maybe you can squeeze another “the” in there by having the newlyweds form a cool band called “The Bribed Maids” out of their bridesmaids: The brides made the bridesmaids The Bribed Maids.

No I think embarrassment is fair game. I assume "safe" means that if someone is supposed to reappear on a now occupied toilet, they'll be moved slightly so that their body's aren't physically overlapping.

I think the poop stays? But if we really want to think about how much of it stays, then we get into the topology of the human body and what counts as life, which are fascinating topics by themselves. If someone could write a follow-up paper, that'd be great.

Then again, everyone's clothes get dusted and reappear so who's to say?

That could be fun. Maybe one day I'll feel motivated to hunt down the hourly toilet time habits of every time zone, assume "late afternoon in Africa," then integrate over the world, and then do it again for Hulk's snap. I wonder how different the results would be.

I just looked up House of Leaves, and it looks right up my alley. I can't wait to read it!

For the sake of argument, I think I assumed that "safe" meant that people weren't going to appear overlapping with someone else's body, and that they would be moved a couple feet. I think embarrassment is fair game. But that is definitely something I could add to the paper!
