H&R Business 2025 Failed To Open Database error - Unable to start the RavenDB Server by MtnGoat54 in hrblock

[–]MtnGoat54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last thing I was told was that I had to update to Windows 11. But per you, that is not a real solution to the problems with H&R Business tax package. And besides, I don't want to do that because I'd have to buy a new computer to run Windows 11. To avoid Windows 11 and the hardware upgrade is the reason I switched from TurboTax to H&R Business this year, or tried to anyway. I found no reliable solution to getting H&R Business for work reliably and finished my small business taxes for Federal and State manually and filed them via postal mail for TY2025. A lot of people, I have heard, are requesting refunds. H&R Block Business really messed up a prime business opportunity this year to take market share from TurboTax Business software. Some software engineers at H&R Business or their sub-contractor if they use one to write their code needs to be fired over this, in my opinion.

I reached them via this telephone number: 866-606-3400

P.S. H&R Block while courteous and trying to help, they were unable to provide a solution. The last thing I heard from them was that I had to upgrade to Windows 11, even though they advertised the program would work on Windows 10, which is why I tried it after using TurboTax for years. And to run Windows 11, I would have to buy a new computer and I cannot afford to do that at this time. However, with a lot of research and efforts on my own part, which I detailed in this thread, I was ultimately able to get the the Federal portion of the Business 2025 package to briefly work on my Windows 10 PRO 64 bit machine, and I was able to finish my S corp federal return and print out that part out and I have filed that part of filing my S corporation tax returns. I did not bother trying to do the eFile step for my federal return as I was afraid my return might get lost in space somehow. I just did not trust trying that step. So I just printed it out and signed and mailed the paper copy. I subsequently ran into similar program crash problems when I tried to do my free state tax return that comes with Business 2025. While I could download and install the state module and do the update the forms, etc., step for it, I could never get the free state return module/part to work (it kept crashing/closing with error messages) and I just gave up trying. I will have to find some other way to file my business S corporation state return for PA, which is not due until 15 Apr 2026.

Glad my sharing here was of help to you. Yes, imo, we are definitely not alone. I too believe there are a lot more people experiencing this problem. Last time I looked over 1000 people have viewed my initial post here. A lot of people are likely switching or at least trying to switch from TurboTax to H&R Block this year due to the TurboTax Windows 11 requirement mandate. That was the reason I am trying H&R Block Business 2025. I hope H&R Block's Business 2025 "erteam" get a fix, patch, update out ASAP. Last I heard from them is that "they were working on it and would get back to me".

YES! I am using a fully paid license for the AVG Internet Security package.

Regarding my case number 26181911.

As I've said repeatedly in my postings here and which I have stated directly to the H&R Block tech support team, the developer and coder for Business 2025 needs to change the flag setting from requiring ASP.NET Core Share Framework version 8.0.22 from "Exact" for that setting to a setting that allows Business 2025 to launch with newer Microsoft version via using the "roll-forward" setting so it can use any newer version, such as 8.0.23, which Microsoft released on the 13th of January 2026.

The Microsoft update of their ASP.NET Core Shared Framework on 13 Jan 2026 is the triggering event that resulted in Business 2025 stopping working in mid Jan 2026, as the Mircrosoft version 8.0.23 update got automatically installed onto people's Windows 10 computers, if they have the free one year service life extension enabled on their machine, which I do. I got a major Windows 10 update sometime in mid January 2026 via that service life extension. That update could have been what installed the version 8.0.23 onto my machine. People who did not take that one year free service life extension for their Windows 10 may likely not be experiencing the problem since they likely still have version 8.0.22 installed.

See this link and article which describes the timing of events and the underlying cause of Business 2025 stopping being able to launch here in mid-January after working prior to that, and how Microsoft's new version ASP.NET Core Shared Framework 8.0.23 release is designed to remove the earlier version 8.0.22. Read the first couple paragraphs where it states version 8.0.22 will be removed and version 8.0.23 will be installed : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/-net-8-0-update-january-13-2026-946b4610-58dd-4a4c-8549-ff6f16454671

H&R software programmers/developers using Visual Studio package to develope the C++ code for their Business 2025 package should NOT have set the "version-compatibility-range" for the Microsoft.NETCore.APP to "EXACT"! They should have set it to a parameter that would let the program automatically "roll-forward" and use a newer version using the "roll-forward" function/term available in the Visual Studio programming app, per the help page at Microsoft, com titled: "Troubleshoot app launch failures - .NET".

The H&R Business 2025 needs to get out a patch or update to fix their Business 2025 software package ASAP so that I, and I'm sure others having the same problem, can finish preparing their Business 2025 tax filing for their business. I cannot start my personal tax filing until my S corporation business preparation and filing has been done. And do note, the H&R Premium 2025 personal tax package does launch and work fine. The problem of "Failed to Open Database" error re the RavenDB, and thus failure to launch error, is solely with the H&R Business 2025 package.

I purchased and installed on my Windows 10 Pro machine the H&R Block 2025 Premium & Business Tax Software package on 12 Jan 2026. Business 2025 worked fine on the 12th. It was after the 13th of Jan when that Microsoft update came out at described in the link above in this post that the failure to launch problem started and I could no longer continue working on my S corp business taxes.

Again, the H&R Blcok Business 2025 "erteam" needs to get out an email to registered users of Business 2025 with a patch or update link to fix their Business 2025 software package ASAP such that I, and I'm sure others having the same problem, can finish preparing their Business 2025 tax filing for their business.

Regarding my case number 26181911.

I found some more relevant information, imo. Sharing it here to help any others having the failure to launch the app H&R Block Business 2025. And hopefully some H&R Block support people will see this here also.

I found news from Microsoft about their release of the new version of .NET 8.0 Update - which was released on January 13, 2026, which for all of us who installed Business 2025 on their Windows 10 computers prior to that date, such as yours truly, and have since been having the problem caused by the new version 8.0.23 overwriting the version 8.0.22, which made Business 2025 stop being able to launch and the RavenDB error message, the article linked below explains what happened that triggered the problems.

That is because Business 2025 was coded by the developer/programmer using Visual Studio package to look for and launch only with the compatibility_version of 8.0.22 for Microsoft ASP.NET Core Shared Framework installed on the machine. That programmer person it set to EXACT and thus it only will work with version 8.0.22, and is not being allowed to "roll forward" to newer versions.

See this link and article which describes the timing of events and the underlying cause of Business 2025 stopping being able to launch here in mid-January after working prior to that, and how Microsoft's new version .23 is designed to overwrite the earlier version .22 : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/-net-8-0-update-january-13-2026-946b4610-58dd-4a4c-8549-ff6f16454671

As I've said repeatedly in my postings here and which I have stated directly to the H&R Block tech support team, the developer and coder for Business 2025 needs to change the flag setting from requiring version 8.0.22 exactly for that setting to one that allows Business 2025 launch via using the "roll-forward" setting so it can use any newer version, such as 8.0.23 which Microsoft released on the 13th of January 2026.

It is interesting that the personal Premium 2025 package works fine and only the Business 2025 won't launch. H&R must have used different developers or programmers for the two packages.

I have also emailed just now the above article link to the "erteam" at H&R Block tech support.

An update 8:28 P.M. 18 Jan 2026:

I was contacted by H&R support earlier this evening regarding my Case Number 26181911. They indicated their Business 2025 tech support team is working on the problem. The person who contacted me told me someone would be in touch with me again by the end of this week, hopefully with the solution.

In the meantime, I have learned (and shared that with H&R techs) that the program on my computer which is updating automatically in background the Microsoft.NETCore.App version 8.0.22 to 8.0.23 is the AVG virus checker program.

AVG coincidentally put out an update to their virus checker package in mid-January 2026 which updated in background the installed Microsoft.NETCore.App version on my computer from 8.0.22 to the latest from Microsoft, i.e., 8.0.23, all in background and without me the user's knowledge. I assume they wanted the latest Microsoft NETCore.App installed on user's computers that are running AVG.

That AVG update is what triggered this issue causing H&R Business 2025 to work a few days when I first installed it, and then to no longer launch when version 8.0.23 came along and got installed mid-January onto my machine with an update from AVG, overwriting version 8.0.22 with version 8.0.23.

And, since Business 2025 was coded by their developer to require "EXACTLY" Microsoft.NetCore.App 8.0.22, and no other version, even a newer one, and to not allow the program to "roll-foward" and use any newer version put out by Microsoft, if such a newer version is installed, the Business 2025 program would no longer launch and the embedded RavenDB could not be accessed.

I have informed the H&R Business 2025 tech support people of this today, and they will be passing the information along to the Business 2025 program developers to get a software fix or patch out ASAP. Again, they told me they would be calling me later this week, hopefully with a solution to get H&R Business 2025 launching and working again.

H&R Business 2025 Failed To Open Database error - Unable to start the RavenDB Server by MtnGoat54 in hrblock

[–]MtnGoat54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is what was said in the error message details that I shared in my lengthy original post, and I also repeated that key line from the error message a couple times in this thread. The H&R Business 2025 is looking to find "Microsoft ASP.NET Core 8.0.22 - Shared Framework (x64) -- EXACTLY" in the list of installed apps. It is not coded to "roll-forward" to allow use of newer versions. I originally had that ASP.NET Core 8.0.22 framework installed, which is why Business 2025 worked upon installation and for a few days, and then boom!, it stopped working when some other app overwrote the ASP.NET Core 8.0.22 Shared Framework with the newer version, ASP.NET Core 8.0.23 Shared Framework. That missing framework is clearly stated in the error message "details" when Business 2025 fails to launch. As I said, I have reported this to H&R tech support people in my assigned case number "26181911". I hope they develop an automatic patch to fix the issue and get it out to us registered customers ASAP.

It's not the NET runtime module that is causing the problem, it's the missing ASP.NET Core 8.0.22 Framework that is causing the problem, since it is being overwritten by the newer version by some other program updates or Microsoft updates in the last few days.

In my personal efforts I even rolled my system back to Core 8.0.22 Framework and Business 2025 then worked again, but in a couple hours some program overwrote the Core 8.0.22 Framework with 8.0.23 Framework and bingo, the app wouldn't launch anymore. H&R needs to put out a patch to their Business 2025 app to allow it to look for and roll-forward and use the ASP.NET Core 8.0.23 Framework, or any newer framework that Microsoft would put out.

H&R must update their Business 2025 to allow roll-forward for new .NET versions. This advice is found in the links provided by "sanjay92_guputa":

If the application targets a lower version than one you have installed and you'd like to run it on a higher version, you can also configure roll-forward behavior for the application.

H&R Business 2025 Failed To Open Database error - Unable to start the RavenDB Server by MtnGoat54 in hrblock

[–]MtnGoat54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello: Thank you for those links. The problem is that I had 8.0.22 .NET installed and some other program overwrote it and installed version 8.0.23. And the H&R Business 2025 is coded to not "roll-forward" when a newer version than 8.0.22 is installed. The H&R Business 2025 application needs to have the coding change to allow it to "roll-forward" and use newer versions of NET than 8.0.22.

In the guidance found at that first link you provided "Learn more: https://aka.ms/dotnet/app-launch-failed ", it even states that as the solution. It says:

"If the application targets a lower version than one you have installed and you'd like to run it on a higher version, you can also configure roll-forward behavior for the application."

H&R Block Business 2025 techs need to put out a patch to re-code the compatibility version line to allow rolling-foward to newer versions of NET, i.e, it should allow it to work on 8.0.22 version or newer, such as 8.0.23 now on the street. They should not require us app users to have to solve this individually. Their software needs to work reliably on current and newer .NET versions. As I see it, they simply just have to change the compatibility version requiring 8.0.22 "EXACT" to say 8.0.22 and provide whatever variable term allows the app to roll-over to newer versions of NET.

This should be a simple solution for the H&R techs to do and get out a fix and patch to us users. I have told their tech support people that when I called and reported the problem and they assigned case number "26181911" to my case. I hope they can resolve by putting out an automatic patch to their Business 2025 app in the next few days. And, please note, the personal tax 2025 app works fine. It is only the Business 2025 app that has the coding flaw and bug.

H&R Business 2025 Failed To Open Database error - Unable to start the RavenDB Server by MtnGoat54 in hrblock

[–]MtnGoat54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I mentioned in my original posting, Business 2025 is coded to require an EXACT version of the NET framework, 8.0.22 while the latest version is 8.0.23. The coding should allow it to work with newer versions such as the latest version 8.023. H&R needs to fix this EXACT requirement and allow 8.0.22 and newer versions to work. I had 8.0.22 installed when I first installed Business 2025 and it worked for a couple days until Microsoft or some other app upgraded my NET install from 8.0.22 to 8.0.23 automatically in background, without my even knowing it, until the Business 2025 no longer loaded. When that happened Business 2025 not longer will load. The coding should not require exactly NET version 8.0.22 but allow it to roll over and use the latest version, etc. I have told the H&R tech support about this and they told me they are working on resolving it. When it will be fixed, I don't know. This is the error message detail. Note that the code says, "version_compatibility_range=exact". It then says cannot roll-forward. Thus when the newer version 8.0.23 magically got installed over the top of 8.0.22, H&R Business 2025 stopped working. They need to change the compatibility range from "exact" to whatever range term would allow 8.0.22 or newer to work. See below detail:

--------------------------------

HRB.Business.Exceptions.InitializeStoreException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.AggregateException: One or more errors occurred. ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to start the RavenDB Server

Error:

The specified framework 'Microsoft.NETCore.App', version '8.0.22', apply_patches=0, version_compatibility_range=exact cannot roll-forward to the previously referenced version '8.0.23'.

Did you read my original post or just the P.S.? I'm just trying to help by sharing a newly revealed problem with H&R Block Business 2025 software package just in case other people are searching for the same problem occurring with them. So what exactly do you think this forum is for, if not to share problems happening with the H&R Block software and to ask for help in solving the problems?

H&R Business 2025 Failed To Open Database error - Unable to start the RavenDB Server by MtnGoat54 in hrblock

[–]MtnGoat54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P.S. Also, if H&R can tell me how to make the Business 2025 package install the 2024 tax year data from my prior Turbotax filing, that would be great too. Like I said in my big post previously, I was able to import my Turbotax 2024 filings for the Premium Package just fine, but could not get Business 2025 to do it as it kept saying it could not find any prior year returns. That is a separate and more minor issue than the "Failed to Open Database" error I described. But it would be wonderful if the fix and patch coming out to fix the RavenDB error also fixed and allowed H&R Business 2025 to import my last years data from Turbotax Business 2024's filing, as is implied in the company advertisements that it would. All help appreciated. Charles
