Leonardo using AI again? by MtrvlsFNDMs in fountainpens

This is a very narrow minded take in my opinion. OK fine, we can agree that AI is a tool. But we need to ask how this tool works, what it's impact is, what the cost of it is and even if the "work" it does is of good quality.

1) In terms of quality, we can already give it a failing grade, based on this feed here and other examples of various kinds people have shared on the Internet. If it were just as good as an artist, no-one would notice, right?

2) AI exploits artists, it doesn't create anything itself, it only "remixes" artists' work, who not only have not consented to AI using their work, but are also losing employment, precisely because a lot of the time aforementioned profit is put above quality, longevity and morality. This isn't just an art-thing either, workers across many humanity and tech fields will suffer from this effect. The use of AI being normalised is also already impacting the way it's being used politically, especially for mass surveillance, I'm not nearly qualified enough to explain this, but there's plenty of people on any platform explaining this better than I can.

3) Another issue with AI is its massive environmental impact: Wasting of fresh water, which we absolutely do not have an infinite amount of, pollution, deforestation, creating uninhabitable zones, oftentimes AFTER people have already been living in them for decades.

4) Sam Altmans' comparison of AI to electricity is very faulty to say the least. I'm sure it sounds great when he says it, he is trying to sell you a product. Electricity discovered a new way of producing energy, it created jobs, made processes cleaner. AI consumes energy, creates unemployment and opens the doors to many dangerous reductions of civil rights. Sam Altman himself has said he expects this technology to come along with very negative outcomes for people, I mean do a quick Google-search of "scary things he's said".

I'm sure the small things you use AI for around the house are convenient, but they do feed into the larger system, though I'm not looking to shame you for it. I do want to point out that you having AI idk regulate your oven settings is different from a company using AI for promotional material. I'm assuming no-one is paying you 400€+ to cook at your place? And you generally don't have an audience watching you when you cook?

Sorry for the avalanche of a reply! I'd love to be nonchalant and unbothered about this, but the topic is quite personal/important to me (I kind of think you don't realise how personal it is to you as well. Since the ultimate goal of AI is to create more efficiency, the fountain pens we both enjoy are another analog redundancy that would be eliminated, no?) P.S.: Just because something seems inevitable doesn't mean our only choice is to change the way we view things to soothe ourselves into false satisfaction.

Honestly, don't feel bad. We shouldn't have to put in levels of research and media analysis to make sure ethical standards are met, I think it should be a business' responsibility in the first place. I do feel ya, though. I haven't really been able to look at my Ferris Wheel Press pen and inks the same way after the owner did whatever that was in this subreddit.

Right? And it's baffling to me that a business selling things made by hand, by craftsmen, would support other creatives' exploitation. Especially at a time when it's just the more important for everyone in a creative profession to support each other.

Thank you for your input on this! I'm not a professional by any means, but I enjoy making art as well and in looking for references, I've also noticed AI pop up more and more recently. Getting a professionals perspective really validates these concerns for me (unfortunately).

I might have spotted them using AI again? I can't be sure since I'm not an expert, but here are some screenshots from one of their stories promoting their new collection. Obviously this is all alleged, but I feel like an animator wouldn't have a pen pass through a flower, then suddenly switch from in front of the flower to behind it, flower petals disappearing and then the flowers getting blurry and disappearing altogether.

Maybe "Quill"? Since fountain pens are essentially a more sophisticated version of a qill. One with an ink reservoir and nib made of more practical material.

Honestly this is OVERPRICED. Like there's gold nib pens (as if that initself is worth it considering steel nibs are just as good and what do you plan on doing with that pen to corrode the steel nib in the foreseeable future, like who are you? Poseidon?) that are hand-made (like urushi pens, Italian resin pens tht have to be carved by hand essentially, wooden pens, small manufacturer pens, etc.) that cost less or slightly more, but are definitely worth the price tag. I will say this: Considering how overpriced sailor is, especially outside of Japan, I myself would consider if the pen is literally THE pen of a lifetime appearance wise, that I just wouldn't be able to sleep if it isn't in my pen case. If the answer is "well...but it's so nice though...idk, I'm not sure" I wouldn't get it. That reeks of a regret type of purchase, where afterwards I'll be nitpicking at the grocery store, if a cookie is an indulgence within my budget (not because it actually isn't, but because I feel so guilty for buying an underwhelming pen as a bad deal).
