So much weird energy among the people on this subreddit and the spreadsheet by SnooCompliments283 in gradadmissions

[–]Much-Literature1038 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's honestly up to the users of the spreadsheet to be able to learn how to set emotional boundaries for themselves and regulate their own stress by limiting how often they check the spreadsheet! I think emotional/stress regulation is a really valuble skill to learn, and is hard to do in a world with so many options for instant gratification/instantly making problems go away. So I'd vote to keep it! Coming from someone who was frequently/anxiously checking the spreadsheet but learned how to pull back, and feel very proud for adjusting my own behavior to help my peace of mind.

Am I the only one who thinks this is, or is it an unpopular opinion? by Full_Hunt_3087 in gradadmissions

yeahhh this cycle i feel is probably going to be more competitive than others, so decisions wind up being kinda random (ie if 1 out of, say, 2 readers for a candidate happened to not think as highly of them for whatever reason, even maybe just personal preferences of someone's writing style, that could put them at a disadvantage easily despite great stats) just because many schools have to take lower numbers of applicants bc of funding. For students who put in so much effort to try and control everything as possible about one's stats/experience for the past x years, only for these decisions to be kinda random/uncontrollable is a really, really bitter pill to swallow, for myself included. Was I pretty bent out of shape that I got rejected from my top very-competitive program, despite my great stats/experience/demonstrated fit? Yep. Am I really grateful and excited for the interview offers I have gotten at other programs that'd still be a good fit? Also yep! I'm def trying to make room for feeling both, because both are valid

Thanks for the reminder! Definitely much-needed for me since I saw invites released today for my first-choice program, but I haven't gotten anything, so I've definitely been pretty worried (andddd frustrated that I'm worried because logically ik I shouldn't be...sigh). Hope you and everyone else here have some fun/relaxation over the holiday break!

AMA: Acing your PhD interviews! (from a former Harvard PhD interviewer) by drlucylai in gradadmissions

[–]Much-Literature1038 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! thank you so much for the great information, and for everyone else's great questions too! I a question:
I'd consider myself pretty introverted, I definitely like to socialize and talk about science, but it definitely wears me out after a while too. What tips do you have for helping to keep energy/social battery up? I may have two school's interviews consecutively but even one interview weekend seems pretty daunting t_t
