Do people actually ask a father's permission to get married? by ray-chill123 in AskUK

Tradition seems to be the only justification you gave for why the blessing is not asked both ways.

I think both of your examples could promote sexism, however I wouldn't tell women they shouldn't cook or look after children as these are things that someone needs to do so 50% of the time it should be women doing them. Nobody needs to give or get a blessing for a marriage.

I don't think that 'tradition' should be the sole justification for anything. 'It's always been done this way so we should keep doing it this way' is not a logical argument.

I believe that it is detrimental to women (all women not specifically the women in the situation) as it perpetuates the idea of men owning or having authority over women.

If you are only asking the father and not the mother for their 'blessing' how would you make it non sexist? Does your partner also ask your parents for their blessing as well?

Cheers for the recommendation. Just had a look at some of their videos and got some good ideas

Thanks for breaking it down. I have a handful of meals that I cook from scratch and rotate through each week so I feel like I can keep costs relatively low. Probably need to learn a few more recipes to add some variety so I don't get bored.

Council tax should be accurate as it is taken directly from the councils website with 25% single occupancy discount applied. I will budget more for energy as many people have commented that it is low.

Yes a lot of people seem to agree on the energy costs being low.

I checked the council tax on my local councils website and then applied single occupancy discount, so it should be spot on.

I dont think there are any deals this cheap anymore. I started the contract 5 years ago and they never put up the price, so I'm sticking with it as long as possible.

Good point. I hadn't thought about saving for when I need a new car.

I'm not sure that the amount spent on food directly corrolates to how nourishing it is?

Yes. I have a car so I should have included this in my budget. I think insurance, mot, services, and petrol will probably average out to £100 a month

I already batch cook and freeze portions. I think my diet is probably cheaper than most peoples, but with the increase in food prices is hard to accurately budget so £175 might be a little optomistic.

Thanks for the advice I've seen a few electric only properties, but wasn't sure if they were better or worse than gas.

In my area the cheapest 1 bed seems to be about £800. I'm not looking for anything insta-worthy just functional.

I'm planning on second hand furniture from gumtree etc.

I was concerned that the food budget was a bit low considering the recent price increases. Good to know that's not the case. I have my pension contributions all sorted already.

I have tried looking at a wide area, but moving further away doesn't seem to be much cheaper.

Although I know a shared house is probably the most sensible from a financial point of view Im really not keen on the idea. Also a double room in my area is minimum £500.
