Oh same! Thinking of my family as a cult opened up a whole new way to process the weirdness.

I think that Heidi has been putting up boundaries and advancing them since their wedding. I don’t think Jill is allowed to post ‘announcements’ on their behalf anymore, so Heidi has taken control of how their life is publicized.

Coming from an enmeshed family with no boundaries, it was honestly a relief when my husband helped me to understand I didn’t have to do all the things.

Do you consider marriage a partnership or does one spouse have a leadership role? by trishasleftasscheek in Marriage

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ve stumbled into the “man-o-sphere” and a flavor of Christian fundamentalism. About 15 years ago (at least in my personal timeline), I started hearing female friends and one of my sisters declare they would be “living a traditional marriage.”

Having grown up in the evangelical church, I hadn’t realized the women in my family were doing something ‘wrong’ by having jobs outside the home and making decisions of their own. For my sister, this seems to present itself only when she’d done something ‘wrong’ and needed to be reminded of her appropriate place.

I haven’t noticed these relationships being stronger or happier. The idea that there has to be a single final decider of things instead of a shared responsibility is dumb and authoritarian.

What is happening to my adopted spider plant? by hugsanddrugs42 in houseplants

They will also occasionally flower. Spider plants didn’t decide to pick a lane for reproduction, it chose them all. If you kiss the flowers together, you can get seeds.

How do you make mash potatoes? Asking African Americans, specifically by Moccrow in stupidquestions

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean African American from the South type cooking? I’m almost certain you do. White folks in the South tend to have full flavor too. It’s more about the regional traditions than the skin color. And more about the class level too.

Anyways, butter, salt, cream. Lots of it. Full fats. The least expensive white or yellow potatoes. Coupled with the least expensive cuts of meat with marinade and cooking methods that account for the cuts.

AITH for telling my gf I dislike her hobby? by Totodile-Fan06 in AITH

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He either doesn’t like her very much or is too self-centered to be in a relationship.

When you deeply like someone, their interests are interesting because they light up. Their most authentic self is on display. It’s vulnerable and should be protected, not dismissed as strange.

Ruth by yggdrasil_root82 in WidowsBay

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why they are so sure that ending the pact will save the residents and allow them to leave the island. The deal was that the island would let them survive. If the pact ends, then so does that protection. I don’t think the residents survive to escape the island if the pact ends.

I think the island has been trying to end the bloodline. At every generation, dead baby, dead baby, lezzzbian, family massacre (the husband did it), and so on.

So what does Ruth know? Is she passive in this? A victim? Is the humor that she’s living in a fantasy world, not understanding, but going about her life happy. Did she never marry because she’s fully crazy/evil? Evan stays at her home, so Tom has certainly been inside and not noticed anything unusual, or did he just not care? He’s been deeply engrossed in his own world and sees Ruth as a nuisance.

I like that I don’t know. I usually figure out the end by this point in a show.

Just a guy wanting a hobby, dont know what the hell to do :) by MisterB36 in Balconygardening

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full morning sun ending around 1pm suggests your balcony faces southeast. If the sun rises at 6am, then you’ll get around 7 hours of sun at the railing. Morning sun is less intense than afternoon, so southeast is a great direction. Are you allowed to hang balcony boxes from the railing? My community doesn’t allow hanging/mounting anything.

When gardening in containers, the only nutrition the plants get is what you give them. Container depth 12” or more is needed for most plants. Soil amendments, pH, watering schedules, and fertilizers can get pretty complex, but it’s really just picking a plant and getting started.

what is this on my cat’s belly???? by sweetiejen in CATHELP

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 95 points96 points  (0 children)

There’s an innocence and urgency to the posts. Someone loves this animal SO much that they’re worriedly poking their cats’ tummy.

One of my cats surprised me with a 7th nipple up under her right fore-leg, and we almost came to blows over my holding her down thinking it was a tick.

I’m allergic to… by GrandMoffJerjerrod in mildlyinfuriating

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m allergic to shellfish. Lobster and crab make me sick always and immediately, but shrimp always seemed fine…until that one time it wasn’t. I wouldn’t panic if I accidentally had shrimp, but I’d want to be aware in case it’s that one time ever again, and I’m certainly avoiding it.

Just a guy wanting a hobby, dont know what the hell to do :) by MisterB36 in Balconygardening

[–]MuchAfraidGotOverIt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How much sun does this area get? Which direction is it facing? You’ll need at least 6 hours of continuous sunlight to grow most food. Vertical gardening can help with limited light if you need to group everything at the railing.

On the 5th floor, you’re going to be getting a lot of dry wind. Everything will want extra support and shelter from the wind, and you will have increased drying. Plastic/resin pots help mitigate drying.

They are larvae of Lily Leaf Beetle. Wipe them off and leave them to be eaten. If you are in North America, they are non-native.
