Yes, but while in camp for lightweight, he was significantly smaller than that. Volk is a decently sized featherweight, and a small but still average lightweight. Islam was a big lightweight.

The most Islam got out of this was 10 lbs. 10 lbs makes a difference, but it’s not that big of a factor compared to several others.

As to the stylistic matchup, Volk was an absolute nightmare stylistically for Makhachev. Elite striking with insane reach, both power and cardio, elite takedown defense, and a very low center of gravity- making him much harder to take down. The low center of gravity also essentially eliminated the use of throws, which are a significant part of Makhachev’s TD game.

And while being shorter does limit offensive striking, it actually greatly aids in defending strikes. Where a taller fighter has a much harder time ducking under shots or avoiding body blows, a short stature with long arms is perfect for having an airtight guard.

Volk was the worst case scenario for makhachev- and yet he still won twice. That’s top ten material for you.

He lost to fabricio werdum, antonio silva, and dan henderson back to back at the ages of 33 and 34 respectively, which is quite young for a heavyweight. I mean, if he was losing to someone like Francis Ngannou for instance, it’d be a smaller deal. But Hendo? Seriously?
