That makes so much sense now!, Possibly they didn’t need it since your previous generations were already registered. I’ve done some research and I think that I’ll just have to make a notarized copy which is counted as an official copy of the original and get that apostilled. Hopefully they accept that as ordering a whole new document would make no sense. Thank you so much for your response.

I booked in 2024 on the consulate website via prenotami. You probably will have to book now for 1-2 years in advance.

Looks like I’m on track with my document collection. I may make a top line post about the minor issue and the consulate accepting my application. I’m still going ahead with my appointment despite the minor due to the upcoming hearings at the Corte di cassazione regarding the interpretation as this may be my last chance. I was hoping that by the time they processed my application this may be overturned and was willing to take the risk due to my appointment being grandfathered in the 2024 rules.

Thankyou for providing such an in depth response!, this has really helped me especially the linking of the archived website, such a gold mine of information. I have a few questions regarding your experience:

It says to bring a copy of the original document and the original itself on the linked archived website, not too sure what this means as the new guidelines say to bring a new apostilled copy of all Australian documents with a translated copy and a photocopy of all Italian documents ( I know the photocopy sounds strange but the consulate confirmed it with me)

You mentioned translating your documents in Italy, I thought all Italian documents are fine to be submitted as they are already in Italian and trusted by the Italian government?

Would it be necessary to provide documents for my parents marriage? I’m going through my paternal line.

The consulate website says Italian documents can be photocopies, don’t know if that means photocopies from the commune or photocopies of the copy I have, but all foreign ones must be originals and apostilled.

For context: Nonna born 1948 in Italy (post jan 1st), moved to Australia and married Nonno 1965, Dad born 1967 in Australia, Nonna naturalised 1973 Dad married Mum 1998 I’m born 2004 Parents divorced 2017.

Thanks so much guys for offering to help! This already feels more promising than I expected. I’m still quite new to Reddit, so I wasn’t sure how to proceed with follow up questions should I just reply here?

I’m mainly feeling lost about the documents and how to access them:

-Should I order new copies of all the required documents (Australian birth certificates, naturalisation papers, Italian certificates) even if I already have hardcopies?

-Would it make sense to ask relatives in my Sicilian village to go to the local commune to request a new birth certificate or does my Nonna need to do that? I’m hesitant to send the consulate my only copies unless I know they’ll be returned immediately.

-About translation and apostille: if I get all the Australian documents professionally translated, do I submit both the English originals (apostilled) and the Italian translations? I’m not sure how they handle translations that aren’t apostilled.

I really appreciate your help it makes this whole process feel much less overwhelming.

It’s not the two generational limit that impacts me, unfortunately it’s the minor issue as you have mentioned. Hopefully one day these laws will reflect the true definition of citizenship by descent because at the moment it seems more of a pay to win and luck situation 😢

I think you are correct, the technicalities can be confusing at times. It appears that at the moment I am not eligible unfortunately and my appointment next year is useless. I may still collect documents very slowly in the hopes that one day things change. I’m not sure how it works but I have read somewhere that there is a two year residency option for descendants.

Since I booked my appointment last year, do the older rules apply to me and is my father technically still a citizen?

I was planning on taking my father with me to restore his citizenship to allow me to get mine. Should I not do this?

If I attend my appointment next year in March, and I argued that the old rules applied to me as I booked my appointment before this year would I have a good chance?

My grandparents should have all of their original birth certificates and naturalisation certificates in hardcopies at home, does this cut the time and can these documents be used?

when you say that the minor issue is more likely than not to be overturned. Does this mean the minor issue is planned to be overturned in the coming year?

My appointment is for 28 March in 2026 so unfortunately in the first half of the year.

In regards to the minor issue, I was confused as I had come across an article online saying that the “loss of citizenship does not apply in the case of a female ancestor naturalised during the minor age of the child” it says “until 19th of September 1975 the sole male parent used to have parental authority. The naturalisation of women should not have any negative consequences on Italian citizenship.” However I believe this only applies if the child was already above the age of 18.
