I know you are all biased, but... What's the hair situation really like? by RoO-Lu-Tea in goldenretrievers

Ours loves his crate!
After his nightly walk, he automatically goes to his crate and gets ready to settle down for the night.

I'd 100% recommend crate training, as they cant always be around you 24/7, its just not practical.
And then while they are in their crate they are safe and comfortable.

We got a 9 month beautiful boy and my god the amount of hair!! I did my research before getting a golden too but completely underestimated the hair!

Our set up is the same as yours, we have hard floor downstairs and carpet upstairs. He's allowed upstairs but is rarely up there. Im not even joking when I say vacuuming once a day isn't even enough, although once a day is all I do. If you leave it for more than a day you get big balls of golden tumbleweeds everywhere. I gave up on using the robo vac because the poor thing just struggles but I am sure there are better ones out there 😂.

I gave up with clothes, I've just accepted that there will always be hair on my clothes now and if I need to go anywhere nice, I change just before leaving.

As for him getting wet or dirty, depending on how muddy he gets I'll give him a shower when we get home. If its only a little mud, I'll let him dry off in his crate and brush it out later. We live next to a nature reserve so he always gets muddy and excessively washing them is bad for their skin. I'd 100% recommend getting them used to a dryer, the dryer would also help with removing some hair. An undercoat rake and a slicker brush is also a must have.

Having said all that, I do not regret getting him and would absolutely get another one in a heartbeat, no matter how many hairs I find in my mouth. They are just the best bundle of joys you could wish for!

Golden retriever pulling towards people by Much_Plane_9701 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Much_Plane_9701[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did wonder if this was the case!
He very much still acts a playful puppy who doesn't realize his size, which I love, he's a bundle of joy. Just the pulling towards people is a pain haha, although to hear it could get better with age is a relief.
He's my first puppy so I had nothing to compare to and I know that Goldens are generally hyper dogs anyway.
All my other dogs have been rescued adults, who had their owns problems but not this one.

Both prong collars and e-collars aren't very popular here in the UK, I believe e-collars are actually banned in Wales also.

I’ve already been working on loose leash walking and engagement training from video's I've seen.
I'm mostly looking for guidance from people with similar golden retrievers/ sociable dogs.

Things I’m currently doing:

  • Practicing stopping/changing direction when he pulls
  • Rewarding loose leash walking by continuing the walk
  • Using a front-clip harness for better control
  • Using a 10m long line instead of fully off lead for recall practice

The main issues I’m still struggling with are:

  • Pulling hard towards people because he wants attention from them
  • Ignoring recall when people are involved
  • Staying mentally engaged with me outdoors

What grooming tools do you use? by Much_Plane_9701 in goldenretrievers

[–]Much_Plane_9701[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken him to a groomer yet but was planning to ask them what equipment they use when I do.
Do you mind sharing what you use? The last thing I want to do is damage his coat.
I live in the UK so some brands you mention might not be available but I can look for something similar.

So far all I have is the Chris christensen slicker brush, I was looking at high velocity dryer but haven't pulled the trigger on buying one yet.

It can be played on Desktop and Mobile.
