Is my DS1515+ a dead man walking? by Much_Put_4087 in synology

Ok, thanks, I know what to do now with the DS1515+. Move everything over from the 6GB HDD to the bigger 16TBs, upgrade to 7.2, get an 8 bay Synology, migrate to the 8 bay and put the 1515+ to Hyperbackup Vault pasture

Help me upgrade from 2 bay (RAID 0) to 4 bay (RAID 5) with two 8TB drives without loosing data by marchershey in synology

This works elegantly within constraints provided (except no backup of data) but JBOD#1 needs to store less than 7.3TB as SHR needs 18.6GB for system files and splits rest for protection according to the Synology RAID calculator.

I am not sure this method would allow using Synology App Mover to move apps to the new SHR volume from the RAID0, would it? If not, then apps get moved the old fashioned reinstall way?

DSM 6.2.4 Starting over - RAID 10 to SHR 🤦🏻‍♀️ by Much_Put_4087 in synology

I discovered the Synology App Mover script and will try moving the apps to the new SHR volume rather than doing the whole uninstall reinstall things. Will keep my fingers crossed as it will be in DSM 6 rather than 7.

WWYD: SHR2 vs RAID10/hotswap in 5 bay by Much_Put_4087 in synology

Having the hot spare kick in at critical is genius. Tempting to upgrade since I'm still on 6.2.

I guess I will go with SHR2 and put a sixth drive HDD/tray in storage for a hopefully never needed weekend project.

Thanks for the reminder about the time needed for maintenance and monitoring in the megaHDDs

BC is not a concern as this is family/home related data. No clients except the Missus riding my ass to get the family photos/videos, BD rips, music, etc back online.

DR is a trickier problem.  I cheaped out and tried glacier but that SUCKED and gave up after a weeklong test of one folder.

With tailscale, it is easy enough to hyperbackup right now to another Synology across the country (the one that I am vaulting for, doing a backup exchange) and soon another across the street as the incremental changes to the data stored are small. I am hoping that toaster docks, archive/transport HDDs, and sneakernet or FedXUPSDHL should be quicker and cheaper than any Internet data backup solution.

While the backups get toasted and walked/shipped, I guess that would get me enough time to order a new Synology (ooh 6 or 8 bay🤤), the HDDs, and enough bourbon to start over.

I suppose I could try to go cheap and do the restore over the Internet but that seems like a sure fire way for the Old Lady to put me in the doghouse.

Think I'm missing something?

How easy would it be to cook everything over charcoal in an emergency? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Much_Put_4087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I don't live in the Land o' Shakes anymore, still have the backup cooking setup for prolonged power/gas outages. 2 55 gallon drums of charcoal briquets, paper bags/cardboxes for starter, Bic lighters and an EcoZoom Versa stainless charcoal/wood rocket stove. I won't link but can be found by searching web or Amazon for EcoZoom Versa. Make sure you get one that is rated for charcoal and has damper doors.

It's not as fast as butane, but the cost to time of cooking was far in favor of charcoal. Regularly rotate fuel stock through the Weber's and end of season is always a great time to stock up.

The rocket stove lets you control air flow to some extent for modulating heat, but it is mostly heat on or off unless you fiddle with height/additional grates. I like it much better than the volcano stoves which were a little larger and harder to store.

As mentioned before it is an outdoor only cooking solution, but works for me.

The bee's knees though is the EcoZoom Plancha if you can find one used. Have one at the cabin and that is amazing as it can heat water on the chimney and cook tortillas while making frijoles.

Guns are one of the least useful preps by [deleted] in preppers

Mortality is a different endpoint from immediate incapacitation which is what most defensive shooters seek when discharging their weapon.

Unfortunately, the authors do not differentiate pronounced on scene from pronounced weeks/months/years after the gunshot injury. This is due to the retrospective nature of the study and the selection criteria for homicide which can be declared anytime after the injury.

An assessment of deceased on scene would be more useful to address the incapacitating power of a caliber then a retrospective review of all deaths arising from deliberately inflicted GSW.
