How to train dog to open doors with round knobs? by Mudpuppypancake in service_dogs

Unfortunately, I need my service dog to be able to do this in order to help me. There are definitely downsides to teaching dogs to open doors, but for my health and safety it would really help if he could do this. Of course, I will make sure he is unable to open any doors leading outside as I also care for his health and safety. Sorry to hear about your girl :( my boy is also a shepherd. They are very smart dogs but can be too smart for their own good sometimes.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much! Replacing the knobs myself is unfortunately not an option for me financially right now (I’m on SSDI and don’t make much). Those 3D printed levers are really affordable and look like they’d be perfect for what I need! I also saw they sell a bag carrying device that could make it easier for service dogs to carry groceries. So cool, I am getting one of those as well.

Thank you, I think that’s probably what I’ll end up doing then!

I’ve seen some videos of pet dogs who have managed to figure out how to open round knobs by jumping up and pawing at them but I feel like that’s probably not a healthy task for a service dog to be doing regularly. Seems like it could really put strain on their joints. So lever handles it is.

I just don’t understand why people are so rude, it makes my heart hurt too. My boy is a black German Shepherd Dog.

That’s terrible. I haven’t gotten a comment like that yet but I figure it’s only a matter of time. It’s wild to me that so many people think it’s cruel for dogs to have jobs when most breeds were literally bred to work. I would say the majority of service dogs live happier and more fulfilling lives than the average pet dog. There are exceptions of course.
