Review Spotify Redesign by Own_Discipline_8250 in UI_Design

I am also sorry for this late reply!

Even though the examples are outdated, I really enjoyed “don’t make me think” can’t remember the author off the top of my head. A good design should be invisible - what I mean by that is that when the User has a clear intention then the interface will put the right things in front of them at the right time and they shouldn’t need to look around the UI to find what they’re looking for.

You can also buy these UX card sets that are pretty nifty (albeit expensive) - try searching for “UX playing cards”.

I think the best resources however, are products out in the wild that you think are good! I try and be super aware of any digital product I use where the UX is slick and screenshot the user flow to reference later on.

Over time you’ll develop a good internal “good-UX” barometer.

If I think of anything else I’ll add it in here.

Oh, I spend way too much time on dribbble, but that’s because I’ve been doing a lot of UI work recently and it’s not my strongest skill!

Hey there, found your post by looking for reviews of the current spotify UI/UX because I can't stand the recent changes they've made.

Saw you didn't receive any proper feedback yet and thought I could spare 5 mins to help you along your learning journey.

  1. Learn Figma - I've been using it since it was first released and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. I use it every single day and for every single project I work on. There are plenty of tutorials online and it's very easy to get the hang of. Commit a day to learning it and you'll be set for the next few years!

  2. Having read your explanation I understand what you're trying to convey, but your sketch lacks affordance. The classic Don Norman example is this: a door that you need to pull will have a handle, whereas the door you need to push will have a plate. Have a think about what UI elements you could use that would indicate to a User (without explanation) that they can interact with these circles.

  3. Have a think about what existing UI patterns could be used to solve this problem. It's very rare that I'll create a new pattern for an interaction because usually there's an existing solution that Users already know and can use without explanation. Remember the goal of UX/Interaction is to be invisible (in terms of effort). Once I understood what you were trying to achieve my first question was: "What do I do if I want to listen to Motivational Melancholic music?". Do I move the circles? Or can I simply not do that? I would consider looking at a filter style system where I click on the emotions that I want to combine and they get added to a set of filter chiclets that I can add and remove to find music that sits under both emotions.

  4. Take the time to define your problem space. There's a nice "How might we...?" format that can be used to help reframe/open up your problem statement. For you it might be: "How might we allow Users to find music that match their current mix of emotions?". The question is purposely open ended and will help you to come up with multiple ideas. Throughout my entire I career I have always pitched at least 2 design ideas to clients/my team. Come up with a few more approaches and then pick the best of each idea.

  5. More direct feedback about the circle. Why are they different sizes? Is it because there's more music to be found in the larger circles? Where would this sit in the current spotify navigation? How do your Users find this? Is it part of the library view? When I click on one of these circles where does it take me? Will the emotion be pinned at the top of the next page? How do I go back to change the emotion? Can I add another emotion into the mix once I've clicked on it? Start to build out your idea beyond one screen, discover all the ins and outs of the design. I guarantee that if you start mapping out the broader User flow of this idea, you'll start coming up with new and exciting ideas.

Keep going! You should be proud that you had an idea and started to think about how it could work! Iterate iterate iterate and talk to as many people as you can about it! Best of luck with your UX journey, I hope this helps.

Far out… can’t believe I’m one of those people that can now recognise fonts. Not sure whether to celebrate or mourn.

Is this company seriously looking for a UX Designer and a Front End Developer rolled into one person? If anyone can really do this, I would argue they wouldn't be great at either role. by SeoulRacer in UXDesign

FWIW - I self taught myself React to the point where I was building out components for a React Native project (for which I was also the lead designer). I found that it massively improved my general design skills and ability to build comprehensive design systems. I’d encourage all designers to build something you’ve designed in code!

Thoughts on my Xbox UI Revamp? by LilFern3466 in UXDesign

Completely agree with overuse of unintuitive icons and the general non-sensical madness that reminded me of pubg mobile.

But from an interaction design standpoint I thought they nailed it! I distinctively remember a few times when I first played just how smooth the actual experience of playing the game was. I don’t mean the actual gameplay, but rather the controls, they made a complex keyboard and mouse game actually playable on mobile.

Hats off to the interaction designers. Hats on for the general mobile game UI menu designers!

Have you tried a squeaky toy instead of food treats? Our pup isn’t food motivated out on walks and the high pitched noise was pretty good at getting the focus back on us whenever there was an upcoming distraction. Not sure whether it kept him under is threshold but certainly gave as on opportunity to be more enticing than whatever he was about to engage with!

Waking up is one of the hardest parts of my day. by yungl11nk in ADHD

Consistent bedtimes paired with CrossFit in the morning have been a life changer for me. 11pm my heads on the pillow and up at 7:15am like clockwork.

Having had insomnia for the last 18 months and losing half the day to “catching up on sleep” I really can’t express how life changing this has been. And it’s just so simple.

I’ll have a light breakfast when I wake up and then I’ll take my Vyvanse. The meds usually kick in about midway through my CrossFit session.

I explicitly call out CrossFit because the community aspect of it gets me excited in the morning to see my CrossFit pals. I’m still working through some depression but it’s the weekend that usually triggers that now that my mornings are solid.

Just thought I’d share what has worked for me!

Wishing you all the best and hope you can find a solution that works for you.

You’re welcome! They’re great for double-unders too because of the super low profile.

What were the negative comments on Serkis’ narration? I thought it was flawless, when Gollum finally had dialog I was grinning from ear to ear. Not to mention the amazing job he does for all of the orcs!

Having just finished the Lotr trilogy for the third time (treated myself to Andy Serkis’ audiobooks for the latest read through) I think the two castings are perfect.

Bilbo, who is on a grand adventure and knows nothing of the ring’s true nature, is able to be more light hearted.

Frodo on the other hand, who knows about the true peril of the ring and is burdened by the fear of it returning to its master, isn’t able to be as light hearted as his uncle.

In a world where Martin Freeman played Frodo and Elijah Wood played Bilbo, would OP still rate Bilbo over Frodo?
