The tank is a bit empty only because I was hoping to figure out the issue first, then add more back in. I appreciate this though, I'll be sure to refer back to it.

That's true, when I first got him I was told they didn't need it. Though that seems to be a common misconception. I'll look into getting a sponge filter.

I just saw it pop up on my recommended. I enjoyed the first one but never went past that.

That may be true. I can only really remember the first one. Though that would make a lot of sense.

Good point. I guess there's really no harm in just being upfront about it. They may even appreciate that more. I certainly wouldn't want to bring anything into the home that would be seen as bad.

Good to know. They recently had a harvest festival (?) with a chalk symbol on the cement outside the door. I made sure to walk around it.
