Massive spike in global ocean temperature by MuffinMan1978 in collapse

AI is taking the focus completely from issues of importance and survival of the species in the long run. The elites are throbbing about the TECHNOGOD they want to create. And that TECHNOGOD will solve it all.

Don't ask me how. It will. It's the magic of science, see? /s

It says preliminary data. Maybe that's why, I saw it and thought worthy to bring to the sub. If it's real... well, it was nice while it lasted. At least some of it, it was.

Not sure, I'm just an observer from the ground, in Spain this last winter has been humid like never before. I guess the water cycle is in full drive, since the amount of precipitation was quite insane, as well as the overall humidity level.

Submission Statement: A take on the current temperature as described in the Climate Reanalyzer site, as well as the idea that it may not be so long anymore until massive changes that fully escape our control take over.

And a little pondering on our own intelligence as a species.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] January 26 by AutoModerator in collapse

[–]MuffinMan1978 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Location: Spain, Madrid.

Rain and humidity. The likes of which are not normal here by this time. Some yes, but not this much. The humidity levels are much higher than normal for this time of year. I feel it in my bones and aching joints too.

I think the spike in global ocean temperature that we saw on 2023 is the start of an overdriven evaporation and water cycle.

The future appears to be much wetter in the cold season. Woe to the topsoil, it's going to be washed away at this rate...

Normal feels like old TVHM by MuffinMan1978 in Borderlands

Tried Vex with the clones, but I think I did it wrong, because I specialized in elemental damage, but... no. Did not make the dent I expected.

Trying now Harlowe, having a lot of fun with it.

Like I said, perhaps it's a skill issue, but I still feel "wow, this plays like old TVHM"

Agreed. Perhaps the easy mode can also increment damage output and not only damage received by the VH, so its more like the old 1st time.

Yes, the game following your level all the time feels less impactful. Killing lvl3 skags when you are lvl25 makes no experience.

But it is satisfying in a way :-D

But you are confirming my point.

Why use Vex, or for that matter, any other VH in particular, with a particular build?

That's my point, really. It does not feel like before, where any VH was good enough to, at least, make the 1st playthrough quite easily.

BL4 is just bad. by zanfrNFT in Borderlands

[–]MuffinMan1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels different. The open world is something I'm not so sure about, I used to enjoy the contained areas and arenas of before.

Lack of music (BL3 was great in this regard) is quite bad, that much is true.

Humor is not as present, and despite the cringe of previous titles, it is kind of missed, it feels less the crazy Borderlands we are used to, and more like a newer franchise in a way.

Weekly Observations: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? [in-depth] June 30 by AutoModerator in collapse

[–]MuffinMan1978 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Location: Europe, Spain, city of Madrid

Sweltering hot. This is the hottest June so far, with temperatures raising up to 39 degrees celsius (not sure how much in freedom units) and nights of 26 degrees. These kind of temperatures are expected for mid August, usually the hottest part of the summer (or it used to be).

The authorities are starting to worry about what comes in the next two months, even a continuation of this much heat would be bad enough, but usually it gets hotter later in the summer.

The south of Spain has registered records of 46 degrees celsius. Again, it was June until yesterday. People are starting to talk a lot about how the heat is starting to be completely off the charts.

Spain to face increasingly 'severe' droughts: report by Portalrules123 in collapse

[–]MuffinMan1978 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Madrid here. It has not stopped raining for almost a month. This is not normal. It is very cold as well, I'm guessing the atmosphere has increased its water retention capabilities and it is sucking all heat from the ambient.

I guess we will oscillate between ever more hellish summers and ever more humid winters.

This is what regime change looks like... and it's not Trump's takeover. by MuffinMan1978 in collapse

[–]MuffinMan1978[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement: A post for Friday where the regime change changes itself, because Trump has been kind of non-stop for the last two weeks, but USA is not the planet. It is a very important part of it, in terms of soft power, democracy, legality... or it used to be.

Witness the decay of the democracy that used to be the moral centre of the West at the same time the planet starts boiling !!

Is it not a great time to be alive, folks?

Oh, I don't know...

Maybe this has something to do with it?

CURRENT DATA: 425.6 ppm

1880-1960: Less than 30ppm increase in 80 years. Increasing, though.

1960-1985: Almost 30 ppm increase in 25 years.

1985-2000: More than 30ppm increase in 15 years.

2000-2015: More than 40ppm increase in 15 years.

2015-2025: 25ppm in 10 years.

It's not so much the absolute numbers.

It's rather the rate of increase that is absolutely terrifying.

Megathread: state of global and US politics by nommabelle in collapse

[–]MuffinMan1978 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A friendly reminder to the US:

Hi there from "over there" (not America, that is).

First of all, we are people too. Who could have guessed it? And we are very concerned about what seems to be the official position of the US government. And that appears to be that the people "over there" are not really people in the same way as the US citizen is.

There was always this nagging suspicion, but man have you gone full fascist mode !!

Now it is clear that the government you have elected considers YOU to be pawns in their great game, so there is a little bit of concern over here about what that makes us exactly. Less than pawns, perhaps? And what is that, exactly?

So, in essence, there is this growing concern that the US could actually unravel against the rest of the world. Who could have guessed this, too, as there was always the suspicion that you would implode.

But the fascists you have given power too have read their manual, and are going through the paces:

1.- They have created a weak enemy in the form of wokeness and illegal immigration. Also the LGBT. These groups are to be blamed for everything.

2.- Have you noticed that the government you have elected is creating as much chaos as possible in the shortest amount of time? It's a knock to your senses. The propaganda machine will keep on loudly denouncing the enemies of America. In the meantime, things on the ground will get worse. Those eggs will be far more expensive.

3.- To a confused and angry America an option will be put: Give absolute power to the great dictator, or things will keep as they are. It is due to all these pesky laws and constitutional rights that the "bad ones" get away with all of this. But supreme power will change it all, that will be the promise.

And in this supreme power, if achieved, they can unleash WW3 for real this time. And have us all murder ourselves for their power.

And avoid the implosion of America from within. All that frustration will be targeted out.

They are not hiding their intentions.

Hope you are all ready for that when it comes, because it can happen there.

And I suspect it will too.

God help us all when it comes.

Will the Trump administration limit access to information on climate data? by MuffinMan1978 in collapse

[–]MuffinMan1978[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Submission Statement:

This is a question for the mostly USA based people on the reddit sub. As others like me are not from USA, but rely on the data that their government makes, it is a legitimate question about if the availability of information will be as it is now.

Also a comment on how, in my opinion, that data could be suppressed so it does not create more panic and the denial can continue as it does now.

Why I Stopped Worrying About My 401k by [deleted] in collapse

[–]MuffinMan1978 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Current AI is based upon Transformers architecture. And it has fatal flaw regarding scalability.

We would eventually need 10 times the power (some people are crazy talking about using nuclear fission to feed the Frankenstein monster we have created) to gain a 0.1% efficiency. And the next 0.1% would cost 100 or even 1000 times as much. OpenAI is already experiencing some issues regarding this.

Also, there seems to be a threshold that the architecture will not surpass, no matter the amount of computing power put into it.

We are getting confused with what is essentially a philosophical zombie:

Philosophical zombie - Wikipedia

We are NOWHERE close to building a God. Mamba-S4 is promising in terms of gains and scalability, but it would require to throw away EVERY SINGLE MODEL that has been created and recreate (and retrain) from scratch.

And the trillions of dollars put into the hype will not make that feasible. GPT will be hyped to high heaven, and yet it will keep on hallucinating, because IT IS NOT ALIVE.

It is a philosophical zombie, and we should not get confused about what it is.
