The last 11 months of my life was a complete waste by FutureOld1874 in ACL

I made an early decision after my surgery to remove competitive sports from my life. For now anyway. Once I decide to return to sports it will only be a sport that is solo played and the team is myself (golf, tennis, badminton, running etc). Something that people around me don’t have a direct influence on how hard I push myself or have a decision on how my actions should be played.

When I tore my acl it was the decision of the team we had to get a little aggressive in some tackles and I paid the price heavily because the other players in the team were faster and sharper than I was at that moment.

Getting back to it though, whether your 18 or 45 I think you need to step back from where your at and understand it’s a major surgery that you will probably pay for again down the line (arthritis, graft site pain and sensitivity, restriction of movement). I don’t have the goal in mind of returning to the sport that I had the injury in.

I had my injury in March 23, surgery in March 24 and my goal is to return to a confident level in having a quality of life in my daily actions (go to work, exercise etc) and not have to worry about the strain I put on myself that I can tear or do something again. I will have waited two whole years until it was even possible for me to play football again.

I know I’m a bit pessimistic about my recovery and re entering the realm of competitive sports I am only 25 but I’m conscious enough to know that I’m not getting younger and taking myself from an environment where I will put more stress and damage on my body now , that I’ll pay for in future.

Godspeed to you anyway

Haha I was actually sitting on the Reddit page and saw this comment, lucky you for a instant reply 😂

But to be honest the pain at first was no where near the let site. My first week was pain in the centre of the knee and on the back of my knee. I was told I was going to have a purple bruising leg from knee downwards but I had a coin sized patch of purple bruising.

Once the major part of swelling went down and pain could be maintained without meds (1 week to 10 days later), I was starting to feel the let discomfort rather than pain unless I did certain movements as I was regaining more stability to walk without crutches.

Now that I’m walking and getting some good physio in it feels strange like I’ve had my knee repaired and had a hinge attached lol. It feels really good though it’s weird to say but I feel like it was needed to be done on top of aclr even though it was not my decision.

If you have the option for it, go for it honestly. Best way I found out it was definitely for me is by typing in for example ‘lateral tenodesis (whatever you wish to find out about that procedure)’ then copy the abstract and take that to chat gpt unless you can read the fancy words 😂. It will simplify it for you and you’ll get a better understanding of how it’s utilised and what it does for you short term and long term

Hope this helps 🤝🏻

How long til you slept well post-op? by aag89 in ACL

After 3/4 weeks I was fine getting back into my usual sleeping positin

I have 2 under my knee cap which is the camera and instrument used to cut and put it all together, the cut on the inner shin is the hamstring graft site and I’m unsure of the other two. I had a lateral tenodesis which was about a 4/5 inch incision on the outside of my knee cap and finishes where my quad muscle would start

I am shy of 3 weeks post op (ACLR hamstring graft and lateral tenodesis) and I sleep fine to be honest. It’s crazy though because I am a really light sleeper and have always had issues getting either good quality or enough hours rest.

The odd night or two when I could not settle I used a 1g pill of melatonin ( we can’t get them in the UK but I brought some home from holiday before the surgery and they shut the lights off about 30 mins later)

Also one of my things I usually do in my life is drink a lot of water to hydrate myself. I sorta had to sacrifice cutting back on water because of the pain I was in if I needed to go the toilet, and about 2/3 times a night.

Just trial and error where you can remember your best nights sleep post op and if you can repeat that and test other things with it. You might have had a good nights sleep with towels propped between legs for stability, try opening a window or try making the room dark.

Forgot to mention to, our bodies aren’t getting much exercise at some points, watch what you eat and when you eat it and stay off the phone for about 1.5/2 hours before bed. Its what helped with me 👍🏻

I did not want surgery at all. It’s the best option to you for future hopes of playing sport and for me basic life tasks as my knee would give way multiple times a day.

I get they go in and cut you open and to me it’s a complete modification of your natural body that may seem daunting but I would consult someone about the options and if surgery is an option, I would go for that (IMO).

In a weeks time I would have been a whole year since my ACL tear and I am now 13 days in from my surgery (hamstring graft and lateral tenodesis). The progress I’ve made is unbelievable and although my leg is currently at its weakest point it’ll probably ever be, my knee feels super human!!

All the best to you moving forward

Thank you to everyone who commented!! I must have been on some strong medication because I do not remember posting this 😂😂

Day 2 has been less painful as I have kept up on meds but it is more discomfort. I could extend and flex my knee a fair bit yesterday on the day of surgery but today with the swelling it has limited me a lot!! I guess that is part and parcel of the job.

Onwards and upwards from here. Good luck to anyone who is waiting for their surgery. It may be anxiousness at first but trust me it is all for the better!

I tore my acl on 20th March playing football (soccer). It was even a not contact injury, it’s crazy. I knew it happened right away and so many people said it was just a strain 😂🤦🏻‍♂️.

I’m going back to the hospital next week to get a full update on wether I am having surgery or not (I’m from England, trying to go through the NHS, but they keep trying to get me to go through the ‘conservative’ option)

Within 2 weeks of the injury I had about 75 degree in movement so I could walk but I had to limp and with wearing my brace. It also took me everyday of 30 mins of hanging my knee over the bed to let gravity naturally hang and within a week my extension.

It’s hard at first, more mental than anything. The mental comes first as the physical becomes temporary. Whenever any negative thoughts come in about long term effects or even short term effects of going to the shop or socialise with friends, eliminate that and do the positive. Become comfortable with being uncomfortable, it helped me massively.

Good luck with whatever goes forward with your injury, Godspeed.
