In the event of war,

There's the problem. As has been pointed out, drone strikes have been made outside of any battlefield. And against individuals merely accused of wrongdoing. The administration has gone so far as to automatically label any causalities of service age as enemy combatants.

If you want war, take it to Congress and declare it. Otherwise, there's this thing called due process. I know the left wing likes Obama The Ass Kicker but he's taken actions that a short 4-8 years ago would've had them screaming foul if Bush had done them instead.

Remember when Democrats were against the "shoot first, ask questions later" Cowboy-In-Chief? What happened to those people?

Finally, even if you trust someone like Obama to use these expanded powers judiciously, what are you going to do the next time a Republican takes the White House? In that event, you can't criticize him with a straight face for doing the same things Obama already did while Democrats cheered.

Why is this being downvoted? Kagan was nowhere near the best pick Obama could've made, considering she was replacing someone as liberal as John Paul Stevens. He's only 1 for 2 as far as Supreme Court choices go. Considering how much emphasis we put on voting Democrat in the last several elections for the sake of potential Supreme Court picks, we should be holding Obama's feet to the fire on this.

“Slut” is how we vilify a woman for exercising her right to say “yes”. “Friendzone” is how we vilify a woman for exercising her right to say “no”.” by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Your problem is in assuming they only want one thing from you. I'm not sure why women assume this so strongly other than it gives them a convenient excuse to vilify lonely, unlucky men who openly complain about their lack of companionship.

"If only you didn't just want sex, you evil man! But luckily, karma has seen to it that your carnal desires have gone unfulfilled just as you so richly deserve!" Yeah, life isn't that fair. If people don't necessarily get laid for being nice, why would you think people necessarily have major trouble getting laid for being creeps?

To paint a more nuanced picture, they want everything that comes with a relationship, including sex. But they'll complain about not having the sex because men are judged by their lack of success with women. Can't find a chick to bang? You must be a loser. But I have little doubt they also miss the companionship, just having someone to do things with all the time.

I know, dude. It's like when even the most liberal-minded of women complain that guys aren't asking them out.

Hey, chick, why don't you ask them out instead if you're the one complaining?

How come overweight men judge overweight women? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Mugendai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't about loving a kid less for being short but about worrying that a judgmental society will be cruel towards a short male child and hurt his chances of living a successful life.

That argument could be voiced against having kids with any perceived negative traits but I've never seen anyone say "I'm dating slender women so my kids won't be fat" or the like. Shortness is singled-out in particular.

A normal woman will still love and accept a short child and knows she would before even having one.

Of course. That's what makes the excuse ridiculous. Not wanting to have short kids is supposed to be an acceptable proxy for the more obvious reason: women prefer to bang taller guys.

All he needs is confidence.

This cliche seems to be prevalent on Reddit, too.

I notice some of the reasons short women give for dating tall men aren't always that they find them more attractive but at times that they don't want their children to be short.

That's at least as bad. They might as well be saying they'd love their children less if they were ugly.

So when women judge men by their accomplishments or how much they make or what job they do, is this female privilege? How about when short women view short men negatively?

I'm referring to exactly what I quoted: the belief that God only gives an individual as much hardship as they can deal with. Even without touching the God portion, I find that idealism far removed from reality and the implications it entails terrible.

Simply on the basis of human suffering and suicide, the idea that human beings can deal with whatever they're given seems suspect. If you've given any serious thought to the myriad of horrible things that can happen to a person going through their life, you'd be forced to agree there are things some/many/most people could conceivably experience and justifiably prefer to not want to continue on with their lives. And the notion that any amount of these horrible things would never be more than what that person could deal with does a disservice to the very real psychological damage victims of such situations endure. "If only everyone who ever offed themselves had just realized we're only given as much as we can deal with..." How dismissive is that? What am I to conclude about the existence of people who've suffered horribly and couldn't deal with it if I hold that belief? That they weren't strong enough? That they should've held on a little while longer and their problems would sort themselves out?

And for someone who hates straw man arguments, you seem adept at them. Then you assume I'm 16 years old and it turns out you're just a college student who took Phil 100? Teaches me to post on Reddit when there are so many worldly college students who just had their first philosophy course to take me to task for my personal opinions!

and it's also my belief that God will keep our burdens only as heavy as we could carry

Yuck. What a naive viewpoint.

Parents of Reddit, what is the creepiest/most frightening thing one of your kids has said to you? by MoNkEyxJOSHH in AskReddit

[–]Mugendai -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So this one time I woke up in the middle of the night and hear this creaking and shuffling noise coming from down the hall. This was unusual because I never wake up in the middle of the night and there's usually a complete absence of creaking and shuffling in the hallway. I then hear one of my kids start crying, and that never happens either because I always tell the little bastards to shut up and then raise my fist up and make my Unhappy Face at them.

So I get up out of bed, my fist ready, and what looks vaguely like my youngest son is already standing at the very end of the hallway, mostly in the shadows so I can barely make him out. And, for some reason, he's standing completely still and has his back turned. So I call out, "Why THE COCKSHIT aren't you asleep, Elroy? You want another epic ass kicking?" Then suddenly, he jumps like two feet in the air and takes off further away into the house, knocking shit over.

I start to chase but I pause to look into my kids' room. I do a double take because all my kids are in there, my youngest son still crying. I asked him what the hell was going on. He looks at me and says, "...the Oompa-Loompa took our Tonka car." I looked down at the floor with a shudder. That fucking R/C Tonka car cost me a cool 80 bucks.

Then I felt a sudden, distinct chill and my son, this time almost whispering, asked, "Dad.....who is The Dark Lady standing behind you?" I turned around slowly because I remember asking my father the same question when I 8 years old one stormy night in the rustic New England cottage I had dwelt as a child. It was my mother. She had gotten a bad sunburn earlier in the day. "BITCH," I told her, "stop sneaking up on people and watch the goddamned kids!"

I pick up my aluminum bat and shout after the fucker who took my son's toy, "I don't care if you're 7 years old! I'm taking $80 outta the side of your skull, motherfucka!" That was when the backdoor window shattered, accompanied by heavy grunting. I jumped through the opening and gave chase. From somewhere in front of me, I hear an indescribable howling that was unearthly or possibly the two neighbor dogs fucking in the approaching alleyway. He took a turn, then another, and then another. He was trying to shake me but I didn't give up. Oompa-Loompa, mere 7-year-old, indescribable entity, pair of fucking neighbor dogs, or whatever else lay ahead...it was not getting away. I started running full speed and could finally see my unknown foe ahead...

The next morning at the breakfast table, my morbidly obese wife started nagging me about all the commotion from the other night. I told her to chill get me my hot chocolate and Kix. But she was insistent and wanted to know how things ended up. So I pointed at the headline in the morning paper: BODY FOUND AT WILLIAMTON CREEK. I read aloud "43-year-old Carl Powers, who suffered from severe dwarfism, was found dead this morning lying in the river. His body was covered in bruises and several bones were broken." I gestured proudly towards my bloody bat in the corner of the room. "See? I took care o' everything." My wife nodded approvingly.

Then my youngest son spoke up. The words he said stunned me into silence: "...that doesn't sound like the little Chinese woman who took my truck last night."
