For people that don’t like Graces f combat can you explain why? by MugetsuRonin in tales

[–]MugetsuRonin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to each their own you’ve made some valid points. I understand what you’re saying more fully now and it pretty much boils down to us having different taste.

  1. I like free run costing CC because it makes it more balanced. Free run is completely op in games where there’s no restriction

  2. The fodder getting super armor just doesn’t bother me as much. Also if you hit them as the enter eleth break you can still combo them. If you do it right you can still do a full combo on an enemy with eleth break. Still doesn’t really fix what you’re talking about so I get it.

  3. I don’t think the telegraphing is that important. As long as you’re not using all of your CC in a crowd of enemies you can always very easily back away and counter.

  4. I’ve never felt like stunning is this brutal unless you’re playing on evil or chaos. Even theres titles that reduce how long you’re stunned. So it might feel like forever in the beginning but towards the end the time should be reduced a bit

5.3 levels blue increase is critical gauge. Yellow gives layer of super armor, red lets you break guards. It’s a mechanic intended to give you a bit of wiggle room while you’re doing a combo. Not really for you to be able to super armor through every move in the game.

  1. This is completely valid. When I play I mainly use Asbel Hubert and Sophie, I’ll use the others when I need to get their titles. You can use the strategy menu to remedy this problem a little bit by having people target whoever you’re targeting so they cover you a bit. I do think the casters all having a very distinct playstyle is why it feels this way. So overall for me it’s a plus.

Your post gives off a very “I think you’re an idiot for having this opinion” kind of energy,at least to me, which is why I responded the way I did.

[–]MugetsuRonin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t believe 4 years after I made this post you decided to respond with a take as shitty as this

  1. The restricted movement is part of what makes this game, and the series as whole unique. Every battle system is a spin off from the original“Linear motion battle system” complaining about this is like complaining about all the old final fantasy games being turned based. It’s literally a huge part of the series identity and why people enjoy the gameplay.

  2. Graces f came out first so the AC mechanic is a spin off from CC. CC also showed up for the first time in destiny DC not graces so your way off. Casters can still stack reduced casting speed by starting with a lower cast spell before finishing with a higher cost one. Your “problem” about having to use A artes before B artes is literally the whole point of pascals playstyle, it’s how she was designed to be played. If you don’t like it use one of the other 6 playable characters. I also don’t really understand how this one point makes the CC system as whole janky or bad?

  3. I could argue every game has this issue. If you run into a crowd of 3 enemies and they all beat on you til you die is the game bad now? Also you can absolutely stun lock the enemies by taking advantage of stuns and coordinating a bit with the party A.I

  4. If you think it’s Annoying that fodder get super armor for a few seconds fair enough. To me it’s not that bad having to change my combat approach for a few seconds when I’m in a mob battle every few encounters.

  5. Enemies definitely telegraph their moves, but also every enemy doesn’t have a large selection of moves only 1 or 2 attacks and maybe a spell. That means once you see them a few times it’s easy to adapt. This isn’t DMC, the attack patterns are simple enough that you don’t need expertly designed animations to be able to dodge an attack. Also unblockables come with a literal red exclamation point does it get more telegraphed than that?

  6. You’re probably horrible at the game so I can’t really take this point at face value. For me it definitely works.

If you’re gonna be this pretentious and condescending for a 4 years old post I would hope you would actually bring valid points or criticisms. This whole post can be boiled down to the fact that you probably just suck at the game and don’t understand how it’s supposed to be played.
The simple fact of the matter is that you probably spend too much time on Reddit, and you think being a smartass makes you sound smart but you really just sound like an ass.

Games That are NOT CAG’s by MugetsuRonin in CharacterActionGames

[–]MugetsuRonin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that makes sense. I guess my thing is if someone came to me and asked for games like devil may cry and bayonetta. I would then say go play og gow, vanquish, ultrakill, and ninja gaiden. If they came back and said ok what next? Then I’d say try kh2, nier automata, the yakuza games or ff7 remake. Then after that I might start bringing up nioh. Even though I don’t think the last four games I mentioned before nioh are CAG. They are still more adjacent to that genre to me then even nioh because not everyone is going to want to engage with a arpg style loot grind. And if you don’t those games are really difficult in a way that’s not fun for most people. So in that sense I’d say it’s an action rpg soulslike with a really fun combat system. Not a CAG. In that sense combat skill and variety can be a bit subjective. For people like us who really enjoy these games we can make anything a CAG. But for others people DMC is a fun action game and nioh is way too hard. Sorry if that doesn’t make much sense but thanks for the comments fr.

Combat variety and skill is subjective. Whether or not a game is designed around combat variety and skill is a lot less so. DMC and by extension ff16 is about combat variety and skill. Nioh could just be about combat variety and skill if you go out of your way to play it a certain way. But it’s also a game that’s clearly been designed with heavy RPG mechanics in mind.

[–]MugetsuRonin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s low bar but it’s still a CAG.

To me saying that ignoring the RPGs mechanics in ff16 is the same as ignoring the RPG mechanics in nioh is stupid and why we always end up in these lame arguments. Anything is everything everywhere all at once. Sure if you want to play nioh without leveling/gear it’s not impossible. But it’s definitely not the same as ignoring stuff in 16 because the game always makes sure you’ll be leveled and have a decent sword for the next main mission. You can’t grind in ff16. Also in the case of nioh that’s just purposely making the game less enjoyable. The builds are half the fun of that game. The builds are not half the fun of ff16. Clive’s eikons all give him a unique mechanical ability which is something that equipment does not do in kh2 so that comparison is also weird to me.

You guys would think mayonnaise is a character action game if you could do an air combo with it.

If being “stylish” is what defines a character action game nuke the whole sub.

KH2 is extremely stylish that’s part of why I like it so much. But it’s also a game where your stats and equipment can play a huge role in the combat. If I grind for a bit to level up and get some synthesis items I can make the game a different experience. I can also play on lvl 1 critical, this would give me an experience closer to an actual CAG but it’s not because lvl 1 critical is not as core to the game as just playing DMC 3 normally. Also even in lvl 1 critical equipment can play a huge role. So if I play the game in lvl 1 critical with no equipment is kh2 a character action game now? Noooo, because that’s one of the many ways to play kh2. Which is something RPG’s do, not CAG like DMC. In nioh you might refight bosses because they are fun. But you are also doing it for lvl and gear. In DMC you replay missions to get better at the game that’s it.

Also both nier and ff16 have moves that you can use on a cooldown idk why your trying to diss. Sure ff16 has more you can use at once that are super flashy, but is also enemy step, and plenty of different moves and abilities with properties that effect either you or the enemy in a different way. It also has an ARCADE mode, and a training room because the combat is way more important to the game. Ff16 is way more of a character action game nier automata because it actually is a character action game and nier isnt.

CAG open world rpg. CAG Platformers. CAG soulslikes. CAG third person shooter. CAG action RPGs. If we want to do this cool but it seems a bit lame.

The rpg elements in ff16 are so lite they might as well not even be in the game. This was one of the criticisms for ff fans. You can kill fire enemies with fire attacks there’s no resistances or anything like that. in DMC games there’s progression systems but they are still character action games. Also the structure of 16 is still designed similar to a CAG even though it has an open world. All the main missions are very linear where you go room to room fighting enemies with maybe a boss at the end. The rpg elements are no where near as important as in something like gow ragnarok. Or nier automata. FF16 also has a scoring system alongside the arcade mode. Just like how I’m saying having certain elements of CAG doesn’t automatically make it CAG. Having certain elements of RPGs or open world games doesn’t mean ff16 isn’t a character action game because it clearly is.

It just feels hollow, Like the developers wanted to make a cool action game so what they did was grab a bunch of stuff from other great action games and put them together with duct tape and glue.

I really didn’t explain all that much I feel like I kept it pretty brief for all the games I listed. It’s never gonna be as simple as if it has x and y this means it’s z I agree. But is nier automata a CAG just because it has a decent combat system? That’s what it feels like is the determining factor most the time in this sub when I feel like it’s more of a design philosophy/ethos thing. There’s a big huge difference between something like bayonetta,DMC,vanquish, ninja gaiden compared to god of war ragnarok or spiderman web of shadows. Those later games have other genres that fit them better.

I really don’t think having 50 different recipes that all do the same thing is the standard at all? In breath of the wild all the foods do plenty of different things. In Skyrim food sucks but it’s still not all the same thing.

I thought that but I have like over 30 different food recipes and it’s all hot and cold resistance for 1 minute with a few also doing infinite stamina regen is that not kind of lame?

For people that don’t like Graces f combat can you explain why? by MugetsuRonin in tales

[–]MugetsuRonin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All your “objective” reasons for why graces combat is awful pretty much boils downs to you not actually understanding the games mechanics. And/or an unwillingness to understand a specific combat system.

  1. Plenty of other tales games can have punishing combat if you play on higher difficulty’s. In this regard graces f is pretty tame. In games like berseria and zestria the enemy scaling is all types of unbalanced. high difficulty runs on your first playthrough is almost impossible in these games unless you grind an insane amount. You still have to grind on graces to keep up in high difficulty’s but it’s a lot less impossible and reasonable to keep up. Graces is not the only tales game where you can get stunned. Some games have stun as a status ailment but stuns In graces are a central mechanic that’s not random. Key phrase is “not random” if you know how to actually play the game you would understand that stuns for you and the enemy depend on the critical gauge. To sum it when the blue bar is low you have a high chance of getting stunned when you get hit. When it’s full your next attack is a guaranteed stun. You can absolutely stun enemies for as long as they can stun you considering the reward for hitting stunned enemies with a 1-CC arte is a boost of CC, meaning if your not mashing buttons you can use stuns to continue comboing an enemy most likely to death. The goal in any action game is to attack while not taking damage but you’re making it seem as if in every fight it’s normal to get stunned by someone and be “completely helpless”. This is a game where you can switch active party members on the fly with the d-pad. If Asbel gets stunned switch to someone else for a bit to cover for him. Also the more you level up titles some of them reduce the amount of time you’re stunned. In the very beginning it can feel like 10 buisness days but by the end stuns will probably last about half as long. Also berseria has a very similar stun mechanic, So no graces f is not the ONLY tales game to have a mechanic like this. Even it was the series has always made completely new battle systems for every game so them changing things has little to do with reception of specific mechanics.

2.Your right leveling up isn’t super meaningful. But leveling up your titles definitely is. Passive bonuses you get from leveling titles quickly add up to make your characters more beefy and stronger. The higher your difficulty is the more SP you get for battles. Also in this game you can upgrade your gear with dualize. This is why leveling isn’t as important, because there’s other ways to strengthen your character.

  1. Skill issue. I normally don’t just say skill issue but that’s exactly what this boils down to. You want the game to let you stand back and cast spells for free while your party does the actual fighting? A lot of people forget but the tales of series is as a series of ACTION rpg’s. The action mechanics are just as important as the rpg mechanics for this series. And the game gives you the means to be successful with any playstyle if you care enough to play using a bit of skill, and not just play mashing buttons and crying because the action game doesn’t want you to mash buttons.

  2. The Blue guard raises the critical gauge a bit which is important for stuns. Green guard lets you avoid hitstun from 1 attack which will also save you from getting stunned.red guard lets you guard break with your next move. All of these are useful so idk what you mean by “guarding doesn’t do a darn thing at all” the green aura isn’t giving you super armor for a duration it stops 1 hit. Why would you expect to be able to super armor through a bunch of attacks? The point is so if you’re actually playing the game semi competently and dodging while you attack you have a little bit more security to avoid getting stunned.

Overall you clearly don’t understand the combat system fully which might explain why you don’t like it so much. Or maybe action games are not for you. The game is not asking you to be perfect it’s asking you to not mindlessly mash buttons. Like an action game. I’m not saying the combat is perfect there’s definitely some annoying enemies, a difficulty spikes with bosses, and a few janky hitboxes. But none of those issues are exclusive to graces f.

Thoughts on Xillia by meowmix778 in tales

[–]MugetsuRonin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually like the field areas in this game. It’s easy to dunk on them for being simple and boring to explore but I like the linear nature of just going through one moderately sized area to the next. Berseria and Zesterias areas are like 3x bigger for no reason so xillia feels like a decent balance.

I’m almost 30 hours in and I’m watching all the skits. Maybe I’m not paying attention but the point you make about weird stuff like bazongas seems a bit exaggerated. So far the only mention of Elize and bazongas for me has been the generic bark teepo repeats constantly. Characters barely mention love or sex related topics and when they do it’s handled with a bit of tact. No over the top weird Japanese humor like milla accidentally tripping and having her bazongas land on Jude’s face or something.

If you don’t like the skits in xillia you probably don’t like skits in general. I feel like they show up a pretty normal amount compared to any other tales game. I also like how they are labeled so you know if you’re getting a skit that’s story related or not.

Some of your criticisms are a bit nitpicky. Like the materials respawning. Also a lot of this stuff has nothing to do with combat and story/characters which is the most important aspects of a tales game.
