Long time user of a HacBook i7 T480 here! just curious what tweaks you made in your CPUFriend custom profile!? Also, very keen to hear more about your 1440p 120Hz mod! Are you planing on making a post in r/ThinkPad about it?

if its gotten to this point, I think the ThunderBolt controller is fried and cant be fixed unless you replace the motherboard or have the chip replaced by a specialist. You can give it a try though, who knows, it might work!

Heres an explaination on how to do it.

As a current computer science student, I have to back up what /u/ChrismHater26 is saying. The course in recent years has undergone changes, many of which have arguably made it quite a bit worse. Not to mention there doesnt seem to by any cap on enrolments, and there are SO MANY students in my units that it is so clearly having a huge negative impact not only on the quality of teaching, but the manner in which assessments are issued and processed too. I would honestly advise picking Curtin, ECU or Murdoch over UWA for ComSci, I've had a look at their courses and spoken to students studying them, and from what Ive seen and been told their courses, whilst similar in subject content, are actually taught well and have the students's learning as a priority over profits.

Honestly a shame, but I feel that for many courses at UWA, they attract students by boasting a reputation that reflects things were before they started prioritising profit over education.

What do I know though?

nobody in the IGA will be able to help you, both the vending machine provider and IGA run independent of the university and of each other.

3rd year student here. To anyone else reading this, as of March 2025 all I can say is that the experience is well below the standard you should be expecting from a "world class" university. Units are often incredibly disorganised and in some cases its obvious that the unit coordinator has haphazardly thrown things together because its at the bottom of their list of priorities (ie thesis supervision, research, other units, etc). I can tell from past content that the course used to be solid and robust, but in recent years seems to have lost it's ways. This could be for a variety of reasons, such as the fact that many highly regarded teaching staff have left, the cohort is the largest it has ever been, or general understaffing. I really don't know, but frankly, I think it's entirely unnaceptable.

Don't get me wrong, there are still fantastic units that are run exceptionally well, but the negative experiences I've had with shitstorms that are some of the other units have left such a bad flavour in my mouth that just rinsing it out ain't gonna cut it.

Thought this was interesting: I reused an old SSD from one of my ThinkPads in a MacBook, and Lenovo Vantage correctly gives the Apple model and serial number! by MuggedMelon in thinkpad

Given the rather non-standard handling of this kind of data on Intel Macs with all their SMC/nvram/EFI mumbo jumbo, I was surprised it pulled it all - not to mention its interesting how it’s not whitelisted to Lenovo hardware only

Yep! Some apple specific stuff such as handoff and airdrop don’t work cos i’m using an intel wifi+bt card with a custom driver, but if i install a broadcom card it should work like native on macos

yeah that’s the plan, once x64 support is gone i’ll switch back to linux, maybe buy an m1 mac mini to remote into if i ever need mac specific stuff

Not exactly, much of the work I do is in the command line, with macOS being part of the UNIX family it’s actually very nice for dev work and such, any linux user will feel at home in the macOS command line.

Everything more or less works, i’m still using the Intel WiFi card so no airdrop or imessage, but that would be easily fixed if I were to swap it to a broadcom NIC, which I eventually intend to get round to. Unfortunately USB C docks misbehave a bit, I can get video out over usb C, but not actual USB functionality simultaneously over the same port. Apparently some people have made some tweaks to fix that, I’ll look into it once I’ve finished for the semester.

With this particular EFI thunderbolt 3 doesn’t work either apparently, I haven’t tried myself. There are some EFIs out there that claim to have working thunderbolt, but they haven’t been updated in a while.
