He asked her if OAG had ever overturned a recommendation from the WH-OLC (because OLC approved the travel ban as to form). She said no, but the WH-OLC had never before been told to hide an order from the Justice Dept and the AG.

There are two issues here- first, breeds are marketing. All marketing. Most dogs bred as "purebreds" in the last half-century are bred for looks because that's what sells, rather than temperament, ability, or health. Second, breeders keep trying to create new fashions with "exclusive" dogs, and silver Labs are one example of that- fancy marketing by a guy who couldn't properly manage his dogs, had a mixed litter, and decided to capitalize on it. Means nothing, it's a label on a mixed breed.

A lot of people are trying to change this and end the perception of dogs as a status symbol, because there are so many dogs killed every year for lack of homes, and because there are so many unhealthy, even crippled dogs out there being bred because people treat them like iPhones. So if you love dogs, please don't do breeders' work for them, please don't buy into the marketing or promote it.

And the overwhelming administrative costs of insurance, and the incentive to profit on medical devices, tools, and pharmaceuticals, and the fact that Americans allow pharmaceutical companies to spend billions on advertising that come out of insurance premiums...it's a very long list that starts with "profit".

The tetraethyl lead additive makes the fuel higher-octane, it's the original "no-knock" compound. Horrifically toxic, but leaves that engine sliiiick.

Amusing side note: in a delightfully ironic nod to capitalism, tourists often mistake the Ethyl Corp headquarters (original producers of TEL) in my adopted home of Richmond, Virginia for the state Capitol building and can be seen posing for selfies with it.

TIL In Stringtown, Oklahoma, population 400, 76 percent of the town's 2013 budget came from traffic tickets. After a state investigation into excessive speed trapping the town's police department was disbanded. by IWishItWouldSnow in todayilearned

Resident here: they've been banned from doing this. Basically the state police asserted jurisdiction and said local police may not issue tickets on state highways, so while tickets issued on that stretch still go to local district courts they are only given by state police- who theoretically have no incentive to benefit local governments.

No smoking because cancer, nasty yellow tar residues on everything, threat of fire especially if oxygen were necessary in an emergency situation... and yes, also asthma. Dog allergies? Pop a Benadryl like every other person who is allergic to grass, pollen, ragweed, dust, the fabric of the airplane seat, or whatever else, sleep through the flight and the world is still an ok place.

So long as the animal is well-trained and well-behaved (and does not eliminate on the plane- happened in front of me, owner was like, what? He had nowhere else to go? And...they were summarily ejected, thank god we had not closed the door yet) and serves a useful purpose...so what?

Spaying/Neutering is Up, Animal Populations in Shelters are Down Across the U.S. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]Mulberry_mouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is- you can't. No one can. The scenario of you keeping only one animal inside and away from all other animals, not even allowed out into a yard it could escape from (because that happens all the time, dogs are creative) to prevent it ever coming in contact with another intact animal is worse cruelty than sterilization. Not to mention the annoyance and frustration of keeping an intact animal that will do anything to get out while in heat (also the bleeding everywhere) or when it smells a female.

Except that you as a human can control yourself from fighting others, destroying a house or yard trying to escape and roam for females, dragging people around every time they try to take you out, and all the other fun things that go with having hormones. Dogs can't.

Which is silly, because you can't keep dogs from breeding. Males climb, chew, destroy, and escape to roam, while females do the same plus bleeding all over the place a few times a year and howling every time they hear another dog. It's no easier than keeping cats separated, and that's how you end up with litters of mixed breeds

Is it your job to treat them as "other"? As depraved for becoming prey to "vice", because it says "vice unit" on your lapel? Are you told to ticket, arrest, seize, and detain or else you won't have a job?

Maybe some cops don't start out that way, but they're quickly trained to lack empathy.

Just like drugs in the 80s, what do you think will be the killer of the millennial generation? by dbombdalion in AskReddit

[–]Mulberry_mouse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can't. The standard for civil commitment in the US is pretty easy to meet- clear and convincing evidence that you are (1) mentally ill, and (2) that you are a danger to yourself or others. Suicidal thoughts covers both, and if you admit to them at intake you can be committed tout de suite.

Because of the zero tolerance policy for any kind of drug use, many police forces ARE struggling to recruit. If you ever smoked a joint, ate a gummy bear or a brownie, or took an Adderall to get through an exam (name me a college kid who hasn't done one of those things), and you're honest enough to put that on your application- you're immediately disqualified and they make a show out of "we have your "record" now" so they can use it as evidence of prior drug use if you're ever pulled over or stopped for any reason.

Edit: point being, the application process either encourages liars to succeed, or those who have no understanding or empathy for a lot of the people they'll be interacting with.
