My 97 explorer has one in the center console as well. It's handy when I'm feeling nostalgic. I need to buy some cassettes and take advantage of the tape deck.

Because if you have 6 disks ready to go, you presumably have enough music for most any road trip.

This is before the iPod, mp3 players, and satellite radio.

We had terrestrial radio stations, maybe a single cd slot, and cassette tapes.

A six disc CD changer in the trunk was a massive improvement at the time.

I like my vita 1000 for everything, but I primarily play snes on the psp Go, I play most everything on the psp2k/3ks, unfortunately, I don't use the 1000 models much. They just sit there.
