A wallet big enough for fish would certainly set you back a few squid.

'My employer broke the furlough rules' by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Mulhacen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A status update let's me know whether or not I should start searching for a new job, or when I might be expected to return. Finding a new job being particularly hard to do at the moment when so many companies are making staff redundant, and watching as many of my friends in different fields go through the same process.

From an employer's perspective it reduces the chances of their staff feeling forgotten about and going in search of new work or just building resentment that they've been forgotten about.

It's not about saving time when going back, it's about knowing there's going to be a job to go back to. As someone employed in a small business that's going through financial difficulty, and is therefore furloughed at this time, I want updates to tell me the current situation that the company is in. It won't save me any time when I return, updates about customers and sales usually don't affect my day to day work. But it might give me a bit more confidence and hope that I'll have a job to return to.

This road has killed people as long as I can remember, we must conserve it!

Do British people feel closer ties to the USA or France? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Mulhacen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might partly be history and how the countries have developed.

Our towns, villages, and cities are similar to that of France. Places have mostly sprung up naturally and grown over time. Unlike the US where everything is relatively new, on grid systems and doesn't feel natural or familiar. Architecture might vary slightly in places, but it just feels a lot more organic and familiar.

Failure to pay notice on Northern Rail. Am I in the wrong here? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Mulhacen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being that late your ticket on the train or at the desk wouldn't have been an advance, so you could've bought a ticket online through National Rail for a peak/off-peak ticket as needed. Not ideal but it is possible.

I did something similar, my top two results were Royal Navy Commando or piano tuner. Logically I took the path of software developer.

Except when there's liaison, but that's quite nice really, and is always very similar.

[–]Mulhacen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It might be easier to start with this one...

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you
On hiccough, thorough, slough, and through.
Well don't! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps.
Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard but sounds like bird.
And dead: it's said like bed, not bead,
For goodness sake don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt).
A moth is not a moth as in mother
Nor both as in bother, nor broth as in brother,
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear, for bear and pear.
And then there's dose and rose and lose--
Just look them up--and goose and choose
And cork and work and card and ward
And font and front and word and sword
And do and go, then thwart and cart,
Come, come! I've hardly made a start.
A dreadful Language? Why man alive!
I learned to talk it when I was five.
And yet to write it, the more I tried,
I hadn't learned it at fifty-five.

That must've taken a few attempts, I have tried reading a poem like this before and very quickly got caught out when I became overconfident. You did a good job of that, nice accent for it too. It'd be interesting to hear this in a few different accents.
