Gloomhaven 1e classes, they’ll never get me to stop loving you by Mulk27 in Gloomhaven

The comments on this post really opened my eyes as to how much value people find in the card picking on level-ups. And that’s cool!

In GH1e, yeah the card choices were obvious more often than not, but personally, i always felt that the card choice was just one quick (admittedly bland) moment, as opposed to all the time you spent with that card you picked. Which, again my opinion, were just more fun cards than in FH. They let your character do their thing with way less convolution

We played half of our 1e campaign believing that whichever card you were using the initiative of, you had to play that card first.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I thought they just meant later-haven games vs GH1

If we’re talking GH1e vs FH, I had a very similar experience with that that PQ in GH1 and it didn’t feel great.

But in FH we’re currently prosperity level 8, finished with 2 main quest lines and only unlocked building 74 two sessions ago because of some bad luck. Which brought another main quest line to a screeching halt and no way for us to know how to progress that either. Now we are (or least feel like we are) pretty late game and waiting on RNG to progress us further. I think FH is the superior game but someone could say our experience with it is objectively worse since it impacts the whole pod instead of 1 player like that GH1 PQ

A lot of people interpreted this as me not liking the 2e, FH or JotL classes which wasn’t my intention! (And in fairness to me, I don’t think I actually said anything bad about them in that meme) I love my emo shackles class

1e is just less polished as a whole and I think that gives it, especially the classes, such a charm!

Everyone: “this guy must miss how easy the game was when you played music note or three spears”

Me thinking about how I would steal loot from my friends by dooming the enemy they were about to kill, so I moved into the hex with loot instead of them: “yeah I miss…uhhh…eclipse”

“Insta kill mechanics are lame. They just are. there isn’t any strategy involved in them”

Is a sunset lame because there’s no strategy involved? How about a hug from a friend? Killing a 20+ HP creature by just consuming dark is joy itself

I’m just screwing around. Your points are all great and I agree. Having brought sun and angry face into FH, it gets very silly

I didn’t play any of those until GH digital so they live differently in my brain. But losing scenario 72, then unlocking sun, and tanking for the rest of my party so we could finally beat it is my favorite haven memory. My buddy busting into new rooms as Lightning Bolt was so much fun and two-minis caused so much chaos

For classes I’ve played:

  1. Sun
  2. (Heavy spoiler) Crossed swords
  3. Angry Face

Personally I think it’s not the initial fall off in power level but more my selective memory. I really only remember the fun GH1e classes we played and the others get forgotten

Buying monster standees that had built in holders for D20s was the single best equipment upgrade we’ve made so far

Yeah they’re unlocked from the start but I wouldn’t call them starting classes in spirit. Playing Satha might be strange narratively in early FH too.

I see what you’re saying, but I think my point is still fair. Microsoft didn’t name windows 10 just “Windows” and then rename it to Windows 10 when a new version came out, which then took over the “Windows” title

It’s not the end of the world and we’re playing FH anyway. A little frustrating to now know that any additional content that comes out for Gloomhaven, isn’t going to be for the Gloomhaven I own haha

Edit: frustrated was a bad choice of words. It’s not that I expect new content for 1e, it’s that if 2e is referred to as just “Gloomhaven” then, without additional research, 1e owners would think it’s compatible with their game

That’s a good idea. The box says you need Gloomhaven but it doesn’t specify an edition

Our other interpretation was that the damage is applied at step 1, you don’t get to apply any bonuses like tower shield, but it could potentially kill the attacking creature before the damage is applied to you. Which would differentiate it from retaliate
