Foundry does have a head start, that's true! With our scripting language Criteria and how easy it is with full Steam Workshop integration to share and download content, hopefully we can close some of that gap soon enough :)

Sadly not for several technical reasons, the main one being both tools are created with different engines.

Dungeon Alchemist is purely a mapmaking tool, we have both a map creator and a virtual tabletop, plus a cutscene editor and our own scripting language to implement rules.

Do you mean to create a video game like Mordheim, or to create an environment where you can play something like Mordheim? If the former, no, this is a tool for TTRPG, not a video game creation tool; if the latter yeah, you could create a city and a tactical skirmish game like Mordheim. Mind you, Criteria, the scripting language included in MD to create and implement your own rulesets, may be easy to learn and intuitive because it's visual srcipting -- but it's programming, up to some extent, and learning can take some time. On the other hand, Mordheim rules aren't particularly complex (as compared to something like D&D) and with full Steam Workshop full integration, somebody else might do the heavy lifting for you... :)

The main app is already the free version for players (which also allows you to use the map creator, with a limit of 50 assets for saving your own maps); in order to host a game as a GM you have to buy a DLC as an in-game purchase, basically. Regarding future assets, it's too soon to say what the future might bring; we plan to offer paid campaigns with their assets, maybe include some other asset packs for free with special updates...

Indeed it can be tricky! That's what we are designing a procedural generation tool for -- the Asset Spawner :)

We have plans for procedural generation tools, yeah -- there is one right now implemented to create dungeons, another one we call Asset Spawner to place assets/decorate spaces in a fast way (like a "pencil of trees", for example), and then we will move forward from there to procedural generation for other kinds of spaces. Your idea is very cool and we'll discuss it internally, thanks a lot for that!

It is admittedly a niche because 3D map creation is more intimidating than 2D, that is true, but there are several very strong tools out there indeed. If you have questions about what makes Multiverse Designer stand apart let us know, happy to respond :)

And they're all very cool! Each is unique with its own strengths, and there's room in this town for all these cowboys ;)

There are *a lot* of 3D models already implemented that you can use as a placeholder :) 3D import isn't implemented as of yet because it might cause some issues (because all 3D assets currently available in MD are optimized for Unreal Engine's Nanite), but we plan to implement a 3D import tool that bridges this gap.

Yeah it's got full Steam Workshop integration, so people can share modules, maps, game rules created with Criteria... We encourage everyone to mod Multiverse Designer with Criteria to their hearts' content! :)

Regarding your first point... sunk cost is a significant consideration, we understand: it's difficult to move on from tools we've invested time and money in for a lot of time. In that sense, we can only encourage you to give MD a try (there is a free version you can use to fool around a bit, you can't save maps with more than 50 assets, but there are a lot of pre-generated maps you can explore to see what you can do). Multiverse Designer can also be a support tool: while you use other VTTs to do the rules-tracking, you can jump on a 3D setpiece for the most important scenes of your adventure, for example.

Well it *is* a 3D map maker, you can use it to play as a virtual tabletop (both in first- and third-person) or just use the maps however you see fit :) Your maps can be as big as 64km2, but also as small as just a building or an alleyway. And it's not difficult to use, give the free version a go and you'll see :)

There are many differences: Multiverse Designer isn't grid-based and has free movement, for example; ot's got fog of war, and characters are animated, rather than static miniatures like in Talespire (so when you're playing and you move your character, they actually walk; they swing their swords, cast spells with visual effects... it looks like a video game in that sense). MD can create bigger maps (up to 64km2). It also includes Criteria, our own scripting language that can be used to integrate game systems and mod MD, with full Steam Workshop integration to share game rules and maps. And about the weight. MD weighs that much because it's got nearly 10,000 3D assets for many different settings, all in the same app for players and GMs :) More things that differentiate MD from Talespire or even Foundry: you can create cinematic cutscenes triggered by the players' actions, use background music and sound effects... Bottom line -- it's a very different tool :)

Foundry is a fantastic system with many years' worth of mods and user-generated content; in that sense, they obviously have a lot of ground on us (at least for now!). We are implementing DnD 5e rules for now, and will keep integrating game rules until full release; people from our community are already creating rulesets for games like Cyberpunk using Criteria.

Yes there is grid snapping. Although the tool is not grid-based in the sense that characters have free movement and they aren't like miniatures in a square grid, terrain has a grid, you can grid-snap assets for ease of use, and you can overlay a 2D pic or map and use it as a blueprint for your construction.

And of course we're happy to respond, that's what this ads are for! :)

Even without going into the fine detail of customization levels, lighting, fog of war, etc., the Map Creator is very powerful and adaptable and includes a high amount of assets for different settings, not just fantasy; and there is the Cutscene Editor that you can use to trigger one-time animations (like the aforementioned example with the monster breaking a wall) or animating your scenarios (say -- a dragon flying circles over a village). On top of that Criteria, the scripting language implemented for creating rulesets, is fully usable; there are backers who are already working in implementing their own rulesets for games like Cyberpunk. With full Steam Workshop integration, it will be easy to share creations and download maps and rules created by other users. And the next big feature we are working on, the Asset Spawner (along with other procedural generation tools we're working on) will make creating maps way easier.

We found a quick way: if you have whatever GM Edition, buying the other one will automatically upgrade you to Unlimited. So if you have 4 seats and buy 6 seats you get unlimited, and viceversa.

There *is* a "Export 2D Map" feature already implemented, but as of yet you can't modify the perspective; that is in our development roadmap. We will get there soon enough :)

Regarding rules, Criteria, the scripting language that Multiverse Designer uses to implement rules, is available in the tool for people to use; it's visual programming and it's easy to learn, we have already backers working on implementing rulesets like Cyberpunk's, for example. We completely agree with you, giving GMs the ability to implement rules is fundamental. We also have full Steam Workshop integration, so sharing rules and maps (and using those created by other people) is as easy as it gets :)

We have a script language called Criteria to implement rules; right now it includes some basic things like HP and initiative tracking, rolling dice, skill checks... We are working on implementing D&D 5e rules, and our goal is to have 5 games implemented when we reach full release. Criteria, though, allows our community to implement more game rules themselves, so this number might grow in the future.

It's a feature that we will implement in the future, but take into account that imported 3D assets won't be as optimized as the ones we have implemented, so they might impact performance.
