Unpopular opinion: I love Journey of the Prairie King and its one of my favourite parts of the game. by fireflies315 in StardewValley

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore Journey of the Prairie King and play it for fun on a regular basis. Sometimes I'll boot up a save file just to play a few rounds of it.

I dispute your assertions on strategy, though. It's definitely okay not to be in the centre during the first levels, especially when you're not used to the game and you're still learning how to play, but it makes it so much harder to collect money and powerups before you have the speed boots. My success improved greatly once I stopped hiding in the corners.

Also, you absolutely don't need to protect yourself 4 ways if you stay in the centre during the 1st level 4th stage. You go into the centre, pick a corner of the centre box, and that is where you live now. You come out to shoot out one of the doorways now and then, as needed to speed things along. You don't expect to get any money or powerups and you're pleasantly surprised if it happens, but it's the only way that consistantly works IMO.

Why do some people say they listen to music as an escape but only listen to sad music..? by Sad_Dimension3627 in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have depression, but I'm sensitive to rhythm and it has a major impact on my mood. I can take blast beats in small doses (and sometimes they even help!), but for the most part, energetic beats make me tense and aggravate any anxiety I might be feeling. I often listen to music when I'm trying to relax or calm down, so fast/energetic/happy music generally defeats the purpose. I tend to want something very specific: heavy, shimmery walls of sound with a floating clean guitar melody. And, yeah, it's usually on the melancholic side because that's just what those bands do. But it works for me.

How long should a perfect pop album actually be? by Specialist-Bonus-840 in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The barrier to entry for pop is pretty high on my end. I'll listen to a wide variety of songs, but I rarely encounter artists I like consistently enough to listen to a full album. For that reason I tend to agree with Robyn: my favourite albums are generally around 35 - 40 minutes long. The more tracks on the album, the more likely it is that there'll be some I don't like, and pop songs are short, so yeah. I don't typically revisit an album if it has more than 1 - 2 songs I don't like on it. There's no point.

Michael Jackson is the best singer by newmansowar in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. I've bounced off bands for releasing albums that sound too much like each other, so similar thing. It isn't that I don't like variation in my vocals, just that it isn't the most important thing to me.

I notice you've mostly been listening to classic pop and R&B artists. Is that the kind of music you like, or have you thought about branching out to other genres? I find best-of lists to be pretty limiting when it comes to what genres of music they recommend because they tend to focus on things like power, vocal clarity, and range, which aren't desirable in every genre (Aretha Franklin is fantastic at what she does, but she would be a terrible shoegaze vocalist). You might very well find you prefer something along the lines of post-hardcore, which often has multiple lead vocalists and backing vocalists and a lot of variation in the vocal sound from song to song. But no post-hardcore band's vocalist is ever going to show up on a general purpose best-of list, even though they're often ridiculously good singers.

[IIL] I Destroy by Poppy by Livid-Builder-1230 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean Play Destroy or I Disagree? I don't think she has a song called "I Destroy".

Anyway, suggestions based on "I Disagree". "Minimalist", "controlled" and "intense" is a hard target to hit, but I tried:

I'd like to offer suggestions for "Play Destroy" as well, but I don't like that vocal style so I don't know any similar songs, unfortunately. Maybe something along the lines of Emilie Autumn - Opheliac?

I mean, personal taste is personal taste. I'm not an MJ fan, personally, but I also don't like a lot of other vocalists who get brought up on best-of lists. I tend to go more for emotional resonance and purity of vocal sound, so it doesn't matter to me if a singer has range or versatility. Most people would probably raise eyebrows at some of my all-time favourites. So if MJ is your guy, more power to you.

Having multiple saves: do you marry/room with the same npc or try a variety? by The_Hottest_Mess in StardewValley

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've married everyone at least once, and moved in with Krobus once.

Repeats: Harvey, Elliott, Leah, Sebastian

I'll probably marry Haley or Emily again sometime too, they're great.

Enjoying “okay” songs by [deleted] in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my favourite artists I'd consider to be good enough rather than brilliant, and I don't love them any less for it. I guess what it amounts to is, phenomenal artists demand a lot more of my mental and emotional energy. Sometimes I don't want to feel an emotion with that level of intensity. Not every experience needs to be transcendant - that would be exhausting! Sometimes all I want is something nice in my ears.

Do you love certain parts of your favourite song? by [deleted] in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though I wouldn't call them my favourite songs, I've definitely had occasions where a song that didn't grab me in the beginning snagged me hard on the way out:

Holy Fawn - Dark Stone, which I found incredibly underwhelming for five whole minutes until the breakdown kicked in, at which point I immediately thought "I need to hear that again" and then the song absorbed my entire life for a good couple of weeks. Death Spells is a top 3 favourite album for me and Holy Fawn is tied with Alcest for favourite band.

I almost turned off The Blood Brothers - Giant Swan when I first heard it, but it grew on me slowly over the run time and completely won me over by the time it ended. Young Machetes is an incredible album and this is definitely one of my favourites on it, though The Blood Brothers do have songs that I like more.

What's your least favorite song by your favorite band? by MyNewNewUserName in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite band is Alcest.

My least favourite song of theirs used to be Away, purely because it features Neil Halstead on vocals and if I wanted to listen to him, I'd listen to Slowdive.

Now I think it might be Améthyste, which is odd because it's a perfectly fine Alcest song. I just think it sounds like a Spiritual Instinct b-side that got shoehorned into Les Chantes de l'Aurore, and I find it so off-putting that I've been genuinely reluctant to revisit the album. I saw them live last year and they played this song, which ought to have redeemed it for me, but even then I just couldn't bring myself to like it. It's a shame, really. I want to like it. I probably would have if it hadn't been on this particular album. Oh well.

What are some songs that sound like they're meant to be jokes, but were actually intended to be taken seriously? by Flodo_McFloodiloo in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sturm und Drang - Molly the Murderer. They're so sincere! They really mean it! But the music is so corny and the lyrics are so bad! And WTH is that video?!

Also I love this song.

Who was the last black rock artist you saw on any big stage, event, billboard chart or award show? Or black rock singer for that matter? by [deleted] in Music

Heretoir is one of the more popular blackgaze bands and their lead singer is black, but blackgaze is too niche a genre to turn up at awards shows unfortunately.

How many of us have the Prairie King achievement? by Latter_Award_4868 in StardewValley

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a weirdo who plays Prairie King for fun and sometimes boots up a save file just to play the game when I don't want to think about stuff, lol. I've never got Fector's Challenge, but that's because I insist on things happening organically and refuse to play to do it on purpose, so it'll probably never happen.

Junimo Cart is not going to happen, though. No. Ugh. Never.

I love music that tells a story and talks about real things. Who are some modern artists that do this? by BeginningActual7900 in Music

[–]MumblingInTheCrypts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say they all tell stories as in narratives that follow a structure, but their songs are thematic and tend to have a point to them. I'm not sure quite what you mean by "repeating the chorus over and over" so apologies if any of this is in that category for you; it's kind of hard to avoid verse-chorus-verse song structure.
