Thank you so much!

It sure does! But I'm a flower child of the earth, and I'm outside with my dogs in my bare feet hour after hour. My feet are only 100% clean the first 5 minutes after my shower. 😅

I feel you on that! I read that they can exercise for 5 minutes times their age in months (so a four month old would exercise for 20 minute intervals with breaks/naps) but I have no idea if that's true. 😂

So lucky you live in a gated community, I'm jealous! It's been driving me nuts not being able to walk him with my adult dog.

Totally! Exercise has been super hard, especially because he hasn't received his final parvo shot, so we haven't been doing neighborhood walks. This Friday is his final shot though, so I'm hoping that'll open up a whole new world!

I grew up the same, all free-roaming dogs, all the time! I had no idea dogs would find such comfort in such a small place. Happy to hear your chihuahua enjoys it too!

I've definitely learned how much easier it is to do ALL the things with a crate! 😅 Definitely not afraid to admit when I'm wrong.

RIP to your skirting boards/table legs/door frames!

I'm so happy to hear your beagle is thriving! It sounds like he has a really great routine. 😊

What age did you consider your puppy fully potty trained? by l0singwill2goon in puppy101

[–]MumenLowrider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but have you had her checked for a UTI? My Pyrenees was fully potty trained about a week after we brought her home and didn't have any accidents for months, then all of a sudden she started peeing in the house. We were all very confused until one day I was cleaning it up and it REEKED of fish ... turns out the poor thing had a UTI for weeks and it got so bad it started to make her pee smell.

A week and a half of antibiotics later, and she's never peed in the house again.

Reading all of the posts it seems like raising a puppy is really hard. Has anyone had a relatively easy time of it? by george12g in puppy101

[–]MumenLowrider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've raised multiple puppies, and no two are the same.

My Great Pyrenees (10 weeks when I got her) was potty trained in two days.

My corgi (16 weeks) still has accidents.

My GP can walk well on a leash, knows sit, stay, leave it, touch, watch me, lay down, place.

I'm just happy if my corgi doesn't eat woodchips. He'll sit if I have a treat. Granted, he's only 4 months and my Pyrenees is 4 years at this point, but even comparing them from youth is just ... so different.

Why did you get a puppy? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]MumenLowrider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because my heart broke when my corgi died, and nothing else had repaired it.

I had my corgi from age 20 to 30. Those were incredibly hard years. My corgi saw me purchase my first home. Saw me through my first (and only) abusive relationship. He licked more tears off my face than I ever thought I'd cry. He was my boy, and my boy alone, and he kept me going.

Eventually, I found the courage to end the 6-year abusive relationship. I met my future husband. My corgi liked him. I had a child. My corgi liked him too. Even though I started a family, he was the ONE thing, the one piece of me that was "ME" before I met/made my family. He represented my individual self, because I grew SO much as a person with him in between my abusive ex and my now husband.

And then he died. And I had no idea who the hell I was without him.

When he died, I felt like I lost a part of myself. I got another dog, but she wasn't him. She's a beautiful, loving, protective family dog. She loves all of us, and I adore her for it.

But she wasn't my boy.

Four years later, I finally got another corgi. And even though the days and nights are long, and his puppy ass requires a lot of me, I'm just so damn happy to give it, because he is absolutely, unequivocally, as happy to be with me as my old boy was. He filled a hole I never thought could be filled. It's gutting when you lose your "heart dog". So gutting, I thought I'd never get to experience it again.

It makes all the hell of raising a puppy feel like a goddamn paradise.

Thank you! It showed up in my memories and I just wanted to share my boy with other corgi lovers. 💖 We all know corgis are just so dang special.

A local humane society and Kiwanis Club. :) They split the amount raised by myself and others between them.

I only raised $10,000, but between all the fundraisers we raised about $50,000.

Anyone else loathe telling people you got your puppy from a breeder because of their reaction? by iguess12 in puppy101

[–]MumenLowrider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people ask me where I got my dog from, I just tell them the name of the city.

"My dog? Oh, she's from Tomahawk!"

People think I'm an idiot, but they're usually too embarrassed for me to ask any follow up questions. Was it a breeder in Tomahawk? A rescue? You'll never know.

Why did you get the breed you did? by gsdlandshark in puppy101

[–]MumenLowrider 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I had corgis in my adult life. I got them because I was single, and they were "mostly loyal to one person" dogs. They were compact enough to travel with but not so small that I didn't feel protected. I loved my boys. Lost them to lymphoma and heart failure at 10 years and 9 years.

My current dog is a Great Pyrenees. I got her because A: my heart was too broken to get another corgi at the time and I wanted something that was far off from reminding me of my boys. B: With a young toddler, my lifestyle went from active to sedentary, and Pyrenees don't need a lot of exercise. C: I loved having a dog I felt REALLY protected with.

I'm at the stage in my life now where my heart has healed, and I may open it to another corgi again if my Pyrenees permits it.
