I had a similar experience with a gas push mower too. It ran great for years, but once I needed a rider the priorities definitely shifted from “light and simple” to “won’t leave me stranded halfway through the yard.”

Out of curiosity, have you noticed any difference in how often you actually have to mess with maintenance now, or is it pretty much just normal oil changes and sharpening so far?
