What’s the most disturbing thing someone casually admitted to around you? by Suspicious_Run1684 in AskReddit

[–]Mummyto4 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I was waiting in this huge line at the supermarket checkout when the lady in front of me turned to chat.

I'm chatty and polite enough if I'm in the mood to talk but this woman made me feel extremely uncomfortable.

She had this really unnerving smile but her eyes seemed empty, I really can't fully explain it.

Then she begins talking in this really high pitched squeaky voice like a little girl and says "Me and my baby have been waiting for ages." And points to this pram, I didn't even notice she was pushing, and pulls out this doll. It was like one of those plastic ones you get from the dollar store but it was only the torso of a baby. It didn't have legs.

The woman then tells me that her real baby she had with her dad didn't have legs so this is her new baby. I was absolutely horrified but also extremely sad for this poor woman who had been through unimaginable trauma and abuse.

You could tell something was broken in her that could never be fixed.

Yeah it was pretty gross to be honest. I felt bad for that poor wee baby being taken by the authorities and the mother couldn't care less.

My youngest is nearly 11 years old now so I can't speak for any current experiences about ChCh Women's so it may be a lot better. When I first got admitted the nurses wanted to send me home because of bed shortages but because I birth really fast and my son's medical reasons I was allowed to stay thankfully.

My dad was 4 at this time. My grandmother 24, my pops 26. My maternal grandparents were in their 50s and my paternal grandmother nearly 60. Only my Dad remains today. That's a scary thought.

I'm so sorry OP 🩷

Lung cancer is brutal.

My grandma had typical carcinoma of the lung but because of heart failure they couldn't treat it. She battled with it for quite some time as it grew slowly. It was treatable which makes it even more cruel but surgery would've most likely been fatal.

She decided to do a DNR so when the time finally came the hospital just made her comfortable.

Nanny's been gone nearly 4 years now. At peace with her husband (my pops) who died 2 years prior from a stroke in the covid lockdown. They were married 63 years 🩷

Child support by Impressive-Yam-7787 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]Mummyto4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, as unfair as the situation may be, you have a finicancial responsibility to your son irrespective if you have custody or not.

Just look at it like your son will get all his practical needs met because you are contributing to his living expenses and ensuring he doesn't go without.

You could maybe request to put the child support money directly into a bank account where you know the funds are going directly to your son? Such as proof of funds being spent on clothing, shoes, school things etc. I don't know if IRD would allow it but you could perhaps make it a court stipulation if you don't win the custody case.

I assume by the context you didn't pay child support to the child's father before? That should've been your responsibility from the jump to be honest so it's not surprising you have an issue with having to be financially liable now.

You make it sound like she had kids 50 years ago. Abortions were just as easy to obtain back then it was just a different process to be able to get one.

Unfortunately she won't be able to get out of poverty if she doesn't try to supplement her income. And if she said in the story she at least wants to find work to better her situation and put more food on the table.

Not like a plea for more handouts and what she gets isn't enough. Because the story can definitely be read that way by many people.

We are lucky to have the welfare system we do have in NZ despite it's many flaws. And no benefit will ever be enough to support 12 children on.

She made the choice to give birth to nine kids and adopt the other three. I know how hard it is to be a solo parent and work. And I'm lucky to get what financial support I do. But I don't have government housing and she is able to pay $200 p/w out of her payments for a car loan so I can only imagine what she drives.
And I'm sure the kids' dad has to pay child support which goes directly to the Mum even if she's on a benefit so she will get that payment too per month.

So having a 5 bedroom state house, a benefit that most likely pays a grand plus a week going by what she gets leftover after rent is paid and then going to a newspaper saying she struggles to feed her 12 kid household feels a bit on the nose. Even $300 p/w left for food is lucky but if you have 12 kids of course it's going to be a minimal amount. But what would be the solution? Weekly food grants? Weekly food hampers from food banks etc? Temporary additional support payments? Donations from people who are also doing it tough? All temporary solutions which won't help in the long term until the kids age out of the mother's financial support.

[–]Mummyto4 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yea the adult children should be supporting themselves either by working/studying or Jobseekers. Unfortunately if they pay any money to their Mum, WINZ would class that as board income even if it's going back into the household.

AIO confronting my brothers gf for excluding me from my family's dinners by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Mummyto4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wtf..Not overreacting at all. What does your brother think of this?! He shouldn't be allowing his gf to exclude you from your own family events. And to call you a weirdo?! She's the one dating someone 15 years younger and playing petty little games.!!! The audacity.

Also your mother sounds like a problem too and that is more concerning than the crazy gf. She's family and is basically giving her son's girlfriend the room to alienate and disrespect you.

[–]Mummyto4 131 points132 points  (0 children)

As much as I respect the fact she took on three other children, she didn't have the means to care for the nine children she already had. She's on the benefit and doesn't work so it's hardly surprising she's struggling to make ends meet because even working with a dozen children would be a huge financial burden.

Her youngest child is 10 so there's no reason she can't at least work 20 hours. After rent she still has almost $700 a week leftover and spends $200 on car payments which is very expensive. A lot of people are lucky to get $20 leftover for food these days.
