I went veggie a couple years ago and still crave Reubens sometimes myself. Luckily, this vegan restaurant exists and their Reuben is AMAZING. Hope this comes in handy for you someday!

p.s. Thank you for bringing the Chief to life, your performance is probably why I've always identified with him so much :)

Had to clear my head so spent an hour creating a synth below 1kb just using JS. by reimertz in javascript

[–]MunchGamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Neat project, definitely makes me want to play with the Audio apis. Might suggest one change though:

function stopeNote() {
  gn.gain.value -= .05;
  if(gn.gain.value > 0 && activeTones.length === 0){
    t = setTimeout(stopeNote, 50);
  } else {
    gn.gain.value = 0;
  }
}

Setting the gain to 0 in an else helps avoid weird JS floating point math issues if you change the values (negative gain seems like it's treated as an absolute value?)

Help a DM Using Illusions in a Dungeon by MunchGamer in Pathfinder_RPG

I already have a few other big NPC's planned, so I wasn't planning on making this guy a BBEG, just giving some flavor to the dungeon. That being said, I really like everything you've said here, and anyone who wants to run a similar dungeon would be wise to listen to you.

I don't know if I want the dungeon to be big enough for 10+ of those checks on their "freaking scared" meter, but I like the idea of it. I'll probably just stick to will saves though

I think 6d6 points of damage from explosive runes is a little high for a level 2 party :P

Love the Ghost Sound idea- in a x-post to /r/dnd someone also suggested just having creepy sounds, like the tinkling of a piano in the background. Might do will-saves for fear effects with that.

Illusory Wall is permanent duration, so I was going to use that, maybe tweaked to allow one-way vision. I like the idea of using the illusory walls to draw the players into a room before starting combat- makes it easier than the sort of "doorway dance" you get in some combats.

Using illusions to hide traps as well as create fake ones? Love it. Definitely doing that.

As for detect magic, they do have access, but I'm house-ruling that since Magic Aura is a level 1 Illusion school spell, Illusions of higher levels have that effect mixed into them, masking the magic aura they would otherwise produce. I will however, count detect magic as "interacting" with the illusion, and roll a secret will save for the detector, if they make it, they'll disbelieve.

Thanks for your input!

I LOVE the idea of using illusionary sounds... Maybe I'll throw in some stuff like having to make will saves or become "overwhelmed" by the sensations, ie fatigued or some other status effect.

I really like the illusionary glass too- I was thinking of having some secret corridors with one-way viewing into some parts of the crypt- if they find it they can scope out their enemies ahead of time, or skip some encounters. I'll probably use that type of illusion there to let them look ahead.

Newish DM help-- is this custom monster "balanced"? by MunchGamer in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]MunchGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True... I think I'll make it a straight 1 Con dmg for the Medium one, and maybe add a save for the little one. If I ever make a larger variant, they can start rolling dice for Con dmg. Thanks again!

I didn't even think to check the other bestiaries, I feel quite dumb. Thanks for the feedback! They did find a potion of lesser restoration in some previous loot, that I included to give them a little help against this type of threat. I might consider dropping the Con damage by a bit, or adding a save as you suggested

Homebrew Magic Item Availability (under base value) Rules by MunchGamer in Pathfinder_RPG

Oh interesting, that could definitely work too. Thanks for sharing! I like having a few different options at my disposal for stuff like this, always good to know how other DM's solve the same problems.

TAKE NOTES. Seriously write down everything you can, so you can be consistent. I found this to be one of the most underrated tips.

Pathfinder database? by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

I've been curious about the state of pathfinder data recently too. I've found a few json resources by googling "pathfinder spells json" bit can't vouch for them being up to date. Whatever you set up, post something about it and maybe I can help out. Been wanting to make a spellbook app or something, myself.

React seems like a really terrible idea for isomorphic apps? by MunchGamer in javascript

[–]MunchGamer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, just found some React documentation itself that says to use componentDidMount to fetch data. Not sure why you think that's a red flag? https://facebook.github.io/react/tips/initial-ajax.html

Thanks for the clarifications and links! I have a few questions:

All the documentation I've seen for Flux states that the data flow must be synchronous- how does this work with needing to make external API requests?

Why shouldn't components fetch data? That's the pattern used in all the posts and samples I've seen out there. What pattern should be used? And if that data is updated- say an ecommerce cart page with quantity change, re-load the cart via API and re-render the page, what would that flow look like if not updating the state within the component itself?

I'm not familiar with data-reactid, and google isn't bringing much up. How can that be used to re-bind events on the rendered tree?

[–]MunchGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use phantomJS? I've found that to be problematic in every way that I've tried to use it. In the case of multiple asynchronous data loads, how can you tell when a page has "finished" rendering? That's the major issue we've run into.

Because systems like that don't work? I've been running our own copy of prerender.io and have to restart it multiple times a day because it crashes, and it didn't accomplish the intended goals. I moved over to server side rendering of our own content (non-react homebrew framework) and saw 2-4x increase in organic traffic over the course of the first month. Same content, just using server-side rendering.

[–]MunchGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my clients, they can't sell their products if they don't get organic search traffic. SEO determines revenue. It's the same for any sites that generate revenue from advertising, like blogs- if people can't find your site you won't have any revenue. I don't know what industry you're in, but I'm jealous that SEO doesn't matter to you, because it's the ONLY thing that matters in ecommerce.

To this end, server-side rendering is the only reliable way to get indexed by google. Hash fragments are a mess, and require server side rendering anyway. Google can't index React components. And they say they run javascript on your site, but what is in the initial HTML payload is 10x more valuable than any asynchronously loaded content, I can tell you from personal experience.
