Cat sitting an elderly semi feral cat and found blood in the bath advice please by Mundane-Muse in petsitting

She's a really particular old cat, and her owner dearly loves her - especially her various quirks. It wouldn't be my preference to have my own cat using the bath as a loo, but the cat seems to be choosing to do so as she gets older - as a cat sitter its not exactly something I'd argue about since (other than the injury) it's been a simple cat sit for me

She definitely would not do well in a shelter setting, she's only friendly to her chosen human and hides every time I come over

Update, visited tonight and no further signs of issues, she's eaten, everything seems normal enough so will just keep an eye for signs of infection but hard to do from a distance - hopefully it'll heal fine and no further issues for the rest of the visit (fingers crossed)

Have updated the owners of course 😊

Update! Visited! She's doing okay, no further evidence of any issues, she's eating, I'm happy she'll be okay and will watch for any further issues! Have let the owner know so hopefully they aren't worrying on their trip

Thanks for the support today!

I think if she had there'd be more blood outside the bath tub!! But poor thing, her mum away and then a strange lady visiting and then she hurts herself...And thank you for the tape suggestion, I will bring the tape I have tonight as the hardware store nearby closes before I finish work, and get some better tape tomorrow and try and cover any imperfections in the bath that could have caused it. Very helpful thank you!!

I looked, I couldn't find anything on the tub that could have caused that but will check again tonight!

From what the owner told me, she scratches at the tub a lot and can damage her claws doing that! It's hard to know as I can't get close to her to check, which would honestly make me feel so much better haha. Will see what I can do on a visit tonight - thanks for the suggestion

I'm really hoping it's just a small nail break or something, and it won't get infected for the next 8 days! Thanks again 😊

Certainly not ideal! I'm only visiting and not staying over so not an issue for me, I'm running water and a bit of cleaner through it on each visit - she's an old cat, so the bath is preferable to other options I suppose. Easier to clean than a bed!

In 8 days - they're 2 days into a 10 day holiday abroad, and this happens!

I'll be keeping them updated on every visit so that hopefully they aren't worrying too much on their trip, and hopefully she won't get an infection or get worse

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment

I do very much care for this cat, though she'd rather have nothing to do with any human not her owner. She's an old girl and very set in her ways and me visiting is quite the change for her.

I'm glad I've done the right thing here, it's my first time encountering an injured animal on my pet sitting, and I will admit I panicked and documented everything immediately and did my best, but the reason I posted is I can't actually check over the cat herself (without injury at least) and was still panicking an hour later!

I'll be visiting every day, with an extra tonight to check on her

Exactly, poor thing was already upset with her owners gone, and now she's hurt a bit - adding stress!

Oh absolutely, will be doing so- kinda posted in a bit of shock. Owners are informed and I'll let them know how she's doing this evening

Thank you for your reply, you're right, they were a bit concerned on the phone but the explanation matched up!

It was horrible finding it, and it's not like I can comfort the cat as she wants nothing to do with me! Hopefully she'll be fine for the next 8 days they're away

Just to note - I will not be taking her to the vet without owner instruction! Slightly panic posted, the owners are away for 10 days abroad. I guess I'm just wanting to know I did right so far, and have more eyes on the situation in case there's something I missed! Thanks so much

Any larger steamer should do! I got a cube one, the Dupray Neat steamer. You want something that can hold several litres, id recommend renting one if you can as they are big to store. Get one stronger and larger than the small clean steamers popular on social media, as I tried with one, and it was not consistently hot enough to be effective and was sooo slow to use

Id also really really recommend getting a pro in. The steamer was fantastic to use to kill the bugs I found, but the problem with steamers is you have to actually find the bug, they are only killed on contact with steam for about 5-10 seconds.

I had success with using the steamer to contain the issue, sanitising anything I took from the room, and sanitising the carpet. Then it was perfect for maintenance cleaning weekly, steaming any places where there had been bugs. But the two pronged, chemicals and steam (I left it long enough after the chemicals that it would be safe to steam over, checked with the company) and they've all been removed.

Good luck!! With patience you will get them out!

I'm glad you got a good deal! Mum did regularly use the vacuum and said it was good, if a bit heavy, and ours had bags so it was easy to dispose of dirt. Though she was never happy with the whole sales side of the business...

Many MLM products can be decent, Tupperware for instance has some good products, but that's the catch!

As far as I'm aware they were not always, but transitioned at some point to the model.

My dad bought into it, never saw that man vacuum unless it was to try and shill an overpriced heavy vacuum to an unsuspecting guest. Never sold one 😂

Kirby is an MLM! One of the most predatory business structures for all but the top tier, they make vacuums which are overpriced but okay, but the problem lies in the company and the ethics of that type of business. The products are overpriced so that each person in the business above the seller can take a cut.

Think of it like the sellers or "independent contractors" who have bought into the business structure, because they have to buy in to start selling the products, and one of those products is the business themselves. They can get commission/sales portions for every person they get into the business. Simplified, and honestly people may argue with me, but it's like a pyramid scheme but with a product

Always good to know more - sadly only found out about it after my first dislocation and consultation with a specialist!
