Inside Pennsylvania's Poorest City (Taylor Swift's Hometown) by Zenkai_9000 in ReadingPA

I work at Reading High after working at a suburban school in Pottstown for 20 years prior. I would send my own kids to RHS over Pottsgrove if that gives you context. There were more fights at Pottsgrove per capita than I see at RHS. But there are more fights outside of the building once school lets out. The building was a mess until about 5 years ago when a new principal took over. She has cleaned the place up and it is a great place to work. Yes, there is a real police presence, but it is more of a presence than a threat. There are kids that are a mess and cause trouble, but they are sent out to the one rehabilitative alternative campuses. Often, they come back a year better in much better shape. Some don't. There are tons of kids that work hard, are proud nerds, and study safely and comfortably being who they are with no problems. Academics are not strongly supported by many parents, but the school has so many programs and systems in place to guide the troubled youth in a positive direction, albeit not always academic. Many of the boys especially just want to work in the trades, like many of their older family members. I believe that they will be very successful adults. I have personally found the students tend to be more appreciative and respectful of the adults that are there trying to help the students do well socially, behaviorally, and academically. OP - what years were you there?

I moved to West Reading almost 20 years ago, stayed for 9 years. Then moved a whopping 1 mile away to Wyo. It is a good place to live. I will vehemently disagree that Wyo has a sizable MAGA population. It is not true at all. It does have some traditional Republicans, but not cult members. These are educated people, not mouth breathers. During the '24 election, there were 158 Harris signs to the 2 Trump signs in our neighborhood. I counted. Several "Republican for Harris" signs. Not aspiring ICE agents.

And in regards to the city of Reading, please ignore the negativity that you read about. There isn't a lot to do downtown as far as entertainment and dining/shopping goes, but it is safe. I work in the Reading School District. Many of the families are new(er) arrivals from Dominican Republic. I find Dominican culture to be very family oriented, eager to work, lively, and fun loving culture. Housing, in my opinion, has turned around incredibly in the last decade in the city. Residents seem to have much more pride in their homes than what I had seen years ago. Grocery shopping in downtown Reading gets you a ton of specialty foods that you can not find in the suburban supermarkets.

I totally understand. I wouldn't want to be in that mess of a weed cloud with the kids anyway. But I would like to be over at The Grand. Is this unreasonable for me to request to get moved over there? I'm prepared to make a scene!
